take my advice man. dont overclock. it aint worth the trouble.

especially when you dont know the long term consequences, got to question yourself, do you want the card to last you long after the warranty?

ok i admit it can be cool to see how high a 3dmark score you can get.

should i up it a lil bit or add more voltages? whats a safe voltage? come on guys POST SOMETHING

The only "safe" voltage is stock. Unless you really know what you're doing, or unless you have a burning desire to destroy a completely good video card, don't mess with voltages. You can fry things much easier by changing voltages, than you can by just regular overclocking.

And I wouldn't recommend overclocking at all. Unless you really need the extra few % of performance. And since you've already overclocked your card, your warranty (if any) is void. If you kill your card, the manufacturer is not liable.

Basically what I'm trying to say is: Be careful. And stop overclocking if you don't know what you're doing.

An overclock large enough to notice will likely shorten the life of your card. But than it may be worth very little by the time it goes - so is a bit of a gamble.

Yeah but are you overclocking for a reason (need more frames/quality) or just doing it for the hell of it

Because you still have a risk other components like the voltage regulators can get toasty

i just see people getting 700/1800 and running fine.. i would love that. My games around 15-35 fps in oblivion with everything maxed

would love to keep it around 30-45

can someone help me with voltages and maybe mem timings?
kinda show me how to overclock a card correctly? :)

Don't OC unless you get an aftermarket cooler or turn the card's stock cooler way up (creating a leaf blower). These card already run hot and if you're trying to hit 700/1800 you have a very good chance of cooking it. Maybe not immediately but it will not live very long.

Keep in mind that the memory is NOT cooled with the stock cooler. If you remove it you'll see that there's little foam pads between the metal base of the cooler and each memory chip. These do not transfer heat, they're only there to keet it from damaging the memory during installation as far as I can tell. If you're OCing 300MHz+, they are going to take some damage long-term.

That said, I don't feel a need to OC my 1800XT 256mb. I run Oblivion with nearly all settings at high, HDR at 1440 X 900 and it's plenty smooth. If you're getting 15-35 fps now, OCing to 700/1800 is not going to get you any higher than about 18-40. Not worth it.

so whats a nice safe overclock then?

i ahve the 2 slot cooler.. it never gets hotter than 55-61/c fan speed at 90% i like fan noise... it helps me sleep at night :) plus my fan in the window, i cant even hear it.

what gives more fps? mem or core? i would think memory.. core just adds more heat :) right?

Wow... you really don't read what people say, do you?

Overclocking won't get you 45 FPS in Oblivion. Bank on it.

Lmao, OCing has nothing to do with peer pressure. We just like seeing the slowdowns and hiccups go away. Most of us here aim for a safe overclock. Unless you're playing 3DMark. That game always taxes your hardware to the max.
