What car would you choose?

A brand new 2003 Honda Accord V6 with voice activated Navi or a used 1998-99 Lexus GS 400.

Both are around $28K out the door.

Reasons to get a Honda Accord:
Cool voice activated Navigation unit
240 ponies
New styling
Brand new!
Reliable

Disadvantage:
Don't look as cool vs driving a Lexus (what my buds say)

Reasons to get a GS 400:
300 horses
Luxury, used but still luxury
Aweome styling

Disadvantage:
used car several years behind

So now should I go for practicality or go flashy? I am leaning towards the Honda. Wanna know what you guys think?

dude a 98-99 GS400 isn't several years behind
You'll love it more so than the new accord.
Do you know how comfortable the GS400 is ??
Especially if it's in mint condition

get the lex

edit: is it certified ?

id go for the lexus... but you know a new GS is due anytime now... so that model will look like crap when the new one comes out...

One thing you didn't factor in is depreciation. New cars lose most value in the first couple of years, so the Lexus has already taken the steepest plunge while the Honda would lose $4000 the second you drove it off the lot. They both might be 28K right now, but 2 years from now the Lexus would be 25K and the Honda would be 21k or so. What's the warranty/mileage situation on the Lexus?

Well, seeing that the GS is a V8, it's gonna be lower than the Honda.

I still like that new car feeling, though 🙂

if it's certified it should be 5 year 100 K miles ? i think..
plus you get awesome Lexus Customer Service.
Complimentary snack and beverage
Free Lexus Loaners
Free Car wash
24 hour free road side assistance you'll even get reimbursed for hotel upto $450 i think if you are more than 200 miles from home ?
etc....

Reality check time. Do you really think that loaners, snacks, beverages and car wash are free? They're built into the price of the service, the hourly labor charge and the markup on parts. It might be a nice world if the dealers actually gave you stuff like that for free, but you're paying a lot more than it's really worth. "Free Loaner" is dealer speak for "We're giving you a one day rental worth $50 and we'll pad the bill $100 to make up for it. Have a nice day."

If you look around
The scheduled maintainance is pretty much fair compared to other cars.
Yes they might offer other services to increase the pricing but you can simply tell them which ones you want done etc.

and being that it's a used vehicle and you still get that service... doesn't that say something ?
AFAIK Honda doesn't give out loaner cars.

I have a Honda CR-V and I take it in for service. They don't give out loaners for free.
Lexus gives LEXUS loaners (ES300, RX300) and sometimes other cars.
Does honda throw in a car wash for whichever reason you come in to the dealership ? whether it be a rattle complaint ?
I can go in for a complaint on my speaker crackling or some other bs and they'll take a look at it.. give it a full car wash and have me on my way.

I would like to know which Honda Dealership does that.

and yes you're right we do pay for those services... but we get more car for the $$$ + the services. Well that's how I see it.. and I dont think that's too shabby at all

Do you own a Lexus? I have had 3 Lexus' so far, and number 4 will be on its way shortly. I have owned an Accord also, and I think it is an easy decision, go with the Lexus

The service you get with Lexus is unlike the service you would get anywhere else. The loaner cars are exactly that, loaners. They do not cost anything and they are always brand new models. The last loaner I got had only 183 miles on it. Because of an emergency, we had to take the vehicle out of state and Lexus didn't mind. Everytime I go in for service, I am always greeted by Mr. Spac3d (not by Spac3d, but you get the idea😛) The level of service is far more than what you receive. If I bring the car in because the work wasn't excellent, they take car of it immediately.

I even brought another car to them to detail, and they did only a good job. I went back to the customer service and told them it wasn't up to their excellent standard and they redid the detail job for free while providing a loaner car.

We had problems with one of our Lexus brakes starting to squeak a little at 80,000 miles. After repeat visits they flew someone from California to take a look at ONLY our car. He came all the way to Ohio, examined the car, and then told the mechanics how to fix it. They actually flew someone across the country because we were not happy. That is service.

I recently made the mistake of buying a new Acura and I was disgusted by their lack of perfection. I will never buy another non-Lexus car. It isn't worth the hassle.

AND, my local Lexus dealer is the best babysitter EVER! They have multiple plasma displays on the walls and they have PS2 and Xbox in the kid's waiting room... maybe during the day I will go in there and play one day😛
Okay, I am not thinking clearly... so I will stop writing now.

if you have engine issues they fly mechanics from Japan 😉

Well the problem is that for me to get that pricing for the lex, I would have to buy it from a third party and not through dealership. I have seen the lex with some nice azz 18" rims and I am not too concerned about buying it from a private party since the thousands I will save can be used to pay for any maintenance jobs.

The two reasons whyy I would consider the Accord are that as pointed out by earlier posts, I like the new car smell too and second, I am worried that a new GS is due some time in the near future. I called a Lexus dealership to inquire about that and they told me that they won't know until a few months before it's released.
