Well Im 16 so that means driving on me own. Iv always wanted a BMW so I figured get a 90's model. Ya can find em for under 10k. my budget is 5-10ish grand so choices are kinda limited. But I was thinking. Maybe I could get my parents to splurge and let me get a MAzda 3 5 door with a 5pd manual? Or would a older BMW be better? Im thinking the Mazda would be more reliable and last em longer but the BMW would probably perform better. Ideas?😛

thats like 3 grand more. well BMWs cause its rear wheel drive and can mod it up due to many parts accesorys

get yourself a pair of decent snakers (a.k.a footmobiles), that way you would be saving tons of $$$ for your college funds and get in (better) shape as an added bonus 🙂

😀 ok Ill have to try my long distance 25mph running so I can legally go down a few roads. though the cops might pull me over going down the high way😕

Mazda 3 is good. What about the Scion TC?
Yeah, for under $10k, I'd go lightly-used econobox. That includes the Mazda3, Protege5, Civic, Corolla, Focus, etc.

You'll have enough to worry about paying for replacement parts on that Bimmer, let alone modding parts.

Don't get the BMW solely because it's RWD. Cut your teeth on a semi-sporty FWD first. It should have all the performance a first-time driver could want 😉

Most parents, being wiser than most teenagers realize, aren't going to buy a brand new car for a 16 year old. However, if you think they might drop $10,000 or so on a car for you, make sure you get them to consider a Protege 5. Proteges may not be fast, but I'll be damned if anyone who has driven an '01 or newer Protege hard didn't have a big grin on their face tossing it through some turns. It was the inexpensive small car favorite of Car and Driver for a few years, until it was replaced by the Mazda 3. (What was C&D's quote? I think it was "BMW verve for half the price." Something like that, anyway.)
