it's not like the 3 is the best car in the world but I like the body style, the interior (both the look and the space), the gas mileage, the handling, and the fact that it comes in 4 doors. I so wanted to get a scion tC but from what I could tell it only came in 2 doors and I didn't want a coupe.

The civic is a really nice car too (that was my second choice) but ultimately I liked the look of the 3 better so mazda ended up getting my money. This is the first new car I've bought in 10 years so I figured I may as well get something I really want.

It all depends on what you're looking for in a car so for some people the 3 might not be the ideal car.

I think it's supposed to be the handling that sets it apart from the Civic or Corolla. I hear they're fun to drive and they are reliable (unlike the 6). Just because you can get the 6 for about the same price doesn't mean you should.

I've been looking at most of the cars you have.

The Caliber at base is cheap and gets O.K MPG but lacks power, the higher models have more pep but you lose MPG and the price tag adds up fast. You can get allot of cool toys for it and it has good space, inside and out.

The Impreza is a great car that can plow through anything but is a bit pricey and not the best on MPG, however, they last. Some don't like the style but for most it's just fine. The inside has a ok amount of room but the back seat looks a tad cramped.

The Mazda3 is also a good car that handles great and gets good MPG depending on what engine you go with. It's a very comfy car and with with a telescopic steering wheel you will always find the ?sweet spot?. However, the base doesn't come with much and the price goes up fast as you tack more stuff on. It has a good amount of room but if you need to haul stuff it may be too small.

The Forenza is not the best car in Suzuki's fleet. The Aerio gets better MPG , has more pep, more head room and comes with a good amount of stuff at base. But the style never won any awards and it has allot of body roll. The New SX4 is pretty neat but the Auto is a tad sluggish at take-off, only gets 24/30 MPG and it's the first Gen so you may want to wait and see what fun surprises the car has before putting down money.

But it has a neat way of doing AWD. It's has FWD for city and highway driving, auto mode that will send power to the rear as needed and lock mode that will split power 50/50 until it hits 36MPH and then it switches back to auto mode. All in all a good car but I only test drove it once so I don't have much to go on.

Hope that helps.

I saw a Honda Civic coupe just a few minutes ago ... it looks very sweet, and looks extremely good at night. Add in great gas mileage, sporty to drive, great reputation and you get a package that is hard to beat.

Suzuki Forenza

Any recommendations?

I have a 2006 Pontiac G6 GTP fully loaded (leather, six disk CD changer, power seats, heated seats, moonroof, stabilitrack, traction control, xm radio, remote start, 240 HP, tinted windows, etc.) for sale right now. I'm looking to get what I owe, which is about $20,500. The sticker was $27,500 when it was new. Anyway, if you're interested in going up to that much, send me a PM. I'd be willing to drive it to you.

It's a great car. I'm selling it because I'm moving to New Zealand.

Nooo, get the Fit instead. It has better functionality, better looks, way more fun to drive. Look at reviews and people love it.

My a$$ felt every rock in the road when i test drove the mazda 3. The pick up was pretty good, its got the best automatic out there. I am happy with my 04 civic si hatchback that I got for 13k even with 30k miles on it. Private party.

The Fit is one of the better handling cars out there. Here is more info Fit

I think for around 14K, it is a nice car. Especially, factor in gas mileage and cargo space, fold down seats.

Civic Si's are always a good bet. The only issue is so many bastards trying to steal the thing.
Floss that Si badge :p

I want a 99-01 civic si just to have fun with. They're not too expensive but such high risk of getting it stolen.

I don't want a 4 door hatchback. I want a 4 door sedan. It's just my preference.

The answer to any new economy car question is Mazda 3... so much for so little...

Mazda 3, hands down. It is an AMAZING car, holds its value VERY well, has great styling (esp. the 5 door) is VERY fun to drive, good MPG, and plenty of aftermarket for it. the only downside is the lower warranty for the 2007's. but you can get a heck of a deal on 2006's now!

Where have you seen deals on Mazda 3 ? And how much of a discount are you talking about ?

I bought a mazda3 5 door out the door after TTL for 16.7k, included moon roof, 6cd, ABS, etc....
but that was a few years ago.

a sub-compact for $14k doesn't make sense IMO. pay $1k more and you get a regular compact. it's not like we're driving in tight italian back streets or anything.

was just looking at the new civic... what the hell happened to the cool rocket-shaped door handles, triangular exhausts, and the damn slick look? americans always get ripped.

I have a Yaris Sedan on the way. I go camping every year. Currently I have a very old Nissan Altima. If I can fit my gear in that, the Yaris shouldn't be a problem.

As for moving stuff... Yeah that sucks, but what else are beer and friends good for!

If I had to go out right now and get a car, some of my choices ...

If new, 15-17k will get you:
2007 Nissan Versa (hatchback, aero package has late availability)
Scion tC
Mazda3 hatchback or sedan

If new & you can wait a few months:
2007 Nissan Sentra, good car if you like the styling. High quality interior and space
2007 Suzuki SX4, looks promising (AWD, nifty hatchback) http://www.suzukisx4.com/

If used:
Mazda6 HATCHBACK (looks like the sedan, versatility of a hatchback), couple of years old, ~30k on the odo or less. 4cyl or 6cyl options for fuel economy vs power.
2005+ Subaru Legacy
Nissan Maxima (2000-01, 2002-03, 2004+)
Nissan Altima (2005+)
Honda Accord coupe

Which car would depend on your needs. Do you want AWD or FWD, fuel economy preference, transmission choice, options, body style & size, etc.

I was not impressed with the G6. The Impreza was too small for me (I drive a 95 Nissan Maxima now, had 2 Ford Escort before that; a 1991 and a 2000). The Mazda3 interior was too plasticky for me. VW Rabbit is generally not a reliable car in the long run. Others you listed, can't comment.

went shopping at the weekend and got offered a great deal on a Mazda Tribute AWD, they are trying to offload their 2006s with a $3000 rebate, plus it was priced $400 below INVOICE....final price was right around $17K

Any views on the Tribute?

I looked up some the reviews on Edmunds and owners seem pretty happy with them...
