I'm going out to visit my aunt in San Francisco with two friends of mine and while we're there i'd like to get out and see the state some. The problem is I can't seem to find a comany that will rent a car to a 20 year old. Any ideas? Thanks

Enterprise? Are you sure? Ithought that was for people under 25.

I'm interested too. I need a car but don't turn 21 until august :(

Not sure if you have to be 21 or not.

Little more I think. You have to get special insurance, and it's two different costs depending on if you're under 21 or under 25.

At least they'll rent in Cali. Some states, like Texas, have statewide laws on the books that you cannot rent a car or drive a rental car if you're under 25. (Except for official use by military personal) I can think of no justifiable reason why this should be the case.

I had a friend who rented a car ealier this year from them and it was ~$10 a day extra and he wasn't required to get any insurance.

He was 24 at the time.

cause he'll be screwed if he wrecks it
And it's almost certainly a violation of state law.

You may be able to rent a car if your Aunt and Uncle are on file as "vouching" for you in some way. Unless their current driving insurance doesn't cover drivers under 25. My Aunt Judy has insurance like that; it's much cheaper than it would be with under-25 coverage.

Enterprise will not rent to under 21s in San Francisco. I suppose i could have my aunt rent a car, have her drive the rental, and i could borrow her car.... Any other ideas or companies that might rent to a 20yr old? Thanks

As you discovered, Enterprise will NOT rent to you if you are under 21 years of age.

Good news is you CAN rent a car but you'll have to find a small local independant (not a national chain) auto rental service. Here are 374 car rental places to research. I just picked one and called them, here's what they told me their requirements are:

1) Must be 18 or over.
2) Must have valid drivers license.
3) Must have a credit card (no debit cards).

Good luck, you're going to need it.

You're welcome.

As I said, you CAN rent a car but you'll have to cold call a few businesses first.

I checked into this and nationwide the minimum age is 21 almost everywhere (I say almost in case there is an exception but I couldn't find it) most places, however, it's 25. Some companies MAY allow someone over 21 to rent the car and then allow you to pay extra to have a driver under 21 be able to drive the car but I have yet to find a company that will allow that either. If you have someone else rent it and they let you drive it and you wreck or get a ticket be prepared to get fined or sued. Also, be aware that many of those cars have MPH trackers and if you speed you can get a hefty fine in the mail 3 or 4 weeks later when they check the logs. Most contracts you sign for rental cars have a maximum speed you're allowed to drive in the contract or they say "the speed limit" and just charge you if you go over the max speed limit of the surrounding area.

When I took my Mazda6 in for repairs at the dealer, they gave me a rental car voucher for enterprise. I'm only 18 and they had no problem renting me a car. All they requested was that I have full coverage on my car (i do) and a credit card. Not sure if this is the normal policy or not.
