Actually, it can. I use FreeBSD (a variant of the *NIX brands) and I picked my girl up using it 🙂 literally ... I opened a terminal on her machine and started typing messages to her and taught how to ytalk/write back. The girl loved it and still brags about how "She uses UNIX for me."

I talked to a chick in a couple of my classes through Windows' "net send" command, too bad she moved halfway across the country. 😛
