I haven't owned a PC since my AMD 2400+ back in the day. I'm getting a smoking deal on a Pentium D 830 for $150, so I figure that's not a bad deal.

Can you guys tell me what I should expect from the chip? :)

It's hot. Quite a power hog. And it's Intel.

That said, killer price dude! I'd go for it.

Powerhog eh, what type of PSU am I looking at to run it? It'll be quick though...quick enough for say my CS2 suite stuff?

I was gonna buy a dual G5, but figured I'd buy the Intel and run OSX once they release their Intel based OSes :)

It will be better then a 2400+ XP....That being said it is a 3.0ghz cpu that games can only take advantage of one core....So basically you have single core cpu speed of a 2-3 year old cpu....Gaming it aint so great and for 150 bucks that is all it is worth, IMO...That being said I wouldn't say an X2 is worth its money if you buy it for gaming only...

If you multitask and like to do some multimedia it is very much worth that price....You got a heck of a deal..Casue at retail price bundled with a non micro board it is virtually the same price as a 3800+ X2 bundled with mobo which will lay waste to it in games (16-22% according to AT)..

YOu should be fine with a quality 400watt power supply as long as your goal isn't to OC radically....

Yeah, I'm probably not going to OC it...and game wise...I have an xbox ;)

It will be mainly used for multitasking

Yeah, since you're saying roughly $200, why not invest in some good water cooling? You could probably get it up to 3.6GHz with water. :D

Ya, you could probably get to 3.8 GHZ on water, even with a bad prebuilt kit that costs around 150 dollars.

Buy it for $150, sell it for $300, add some cash and get 3800+ X2.

I tried AMD many times before, but could never justify lack of hyperthreading, thus i always ended up using P4 cpus. With X2 (and especially 3800+) its whole new ballgame. Now AMD has a better multitasking cpu, period. Low temps, low power requirement, very impressive.

All in all, you should get it. Even if you run it at stock speeds, or with an overclock of 200MHZ, it will run programs pretty well. Just be careful of thremal throttling if your on air.

I was able to get the 840 @3.8 on air I have 3 120mm case fans and my case has mesh side. They will OC well if you have plently of cooling. If you dont then dont try.

X2 = AMD's dual-core processor.

The Pentium D is a very power-hungry high-temps CPU.

I would never recommend one, though in your case, your deal was certainly good.

The lowest end X2 , the X2 3800+ actually generally outperforms the P-D 830, & quite dominates the 820

I would like to see an X2 3800@2.7 (not too many but they are there) against that 840@3.8 It will give it a run for its money, at 1/3rd the cost, and heat !

Well according to this, a 3.8 gets beat by a 2.4 so at 2.7, the 3800 would whip the 820@3.8, all cores being equal. Why don;t you buy one, OC it on air, and prove me wrong ?

Still you don't deny the fact that a 820 oced to 3.8 is 1/5th the price of the 4800+ oced to 2.7 but not 1/5th the performance. Your first statement just eeks of fanboyism.
