What can you tell me about creating my own nameservers?

I am starting my own page running off my 2nd comp sitting here in my room. The site is going, and can be accessed via IP at the moment. I just bought a new domain name, but want to use a nameserver, not any of that URL forwarding or redirect crap. I want the real thing.

What do I need to know about nameservers, and how do I get my own?

Don't try to run your own nameserver. It's a huge pain! I do admin for one at work and it's constantly needing patching or breaking for some unknown reason. We use BIND running on FreeBSD.

I'd recommend you checkout zoneedit.com or hn.org. Both provide free DNS, though zoneedit.com limits you to 5 free.

A good starting point for getting yourself started quickly and easily is Linux Documentation Project DNS HowTo

I've got four dedicated DNS machines and a couple of machines that can act as DNS servers when needed and I haven't had any of them crash or misbehave in years. It may still be more work than you want if you don't already know what you're doing.
