Other than writing 4.7GB of data into one disc, what is the DVD-R/RW capable of?

Is it capable of copying a DVD movie? I would think the movie industry prepared for this. Are there any copy protections?

Well you cant do a direct DVD2DVD copy.. due to copyright protection.

however you have to rip it and then reencode it and then burn it..

to me.. its much easier to just buy the freaking dvd..

I will use the dvd burner for making my movies on to dvd and data stuff.

mostly because many dvds are double layered. they wouldn't fit on a dvdr anyways.

I'm looking to get one next year to back up my hard drives- 40GB worth of data on, what, 8 discs instead of 30 CD-Rs?

The thing that sucks is that DVD burners are so ridiculously slow compared to CD burners... Do they have 4x models out yet?? Either way, 4.7GB is going to take a LONG time.

Once LiteOn comes out with the 48x DVD burner that sells for less than $90 shipped at NewEgg, I'll be all over it.

It enables you to combine many many porn CD's into a couple DVD-R discs, that alone is worth $400. heh

Uh...4x dvd burners are not the same as 4x cdrws. A 4x dvd burner will write a lot faster than a 4x cdrw could ever do.

Example:

Some specs from www.cdrinfo.com on one of the Pioneer DVD writers.

DVD-R: 2X-CLV (2.770 MB/s), 1X-CLV (1.385 MB/s)
DVD-RW (both v1.0/1.1): 1X-CLV (1.385 MB/s)
CD-R: 8X-CLV (1.20 MB/s), 4X-CLV (0.60 MB/s)
CD-RW: 4X-CLV (0.60MB/s)

Compare the 2X recording speed of the DVD-R to the 8X recording speed of the CD-R. Notice the little difference there?

Also from the same review: "At 1X writing speed, a full DVD-R/W will need around 63-64mins to finish and with 2X writing speed (DVD-R only), you will need half that time, only 35mins." 35 minutes to record 4.4 gigs. I want to see a 2X cdrw do that!

EDIT: 2 AM and I'm bored so what the hey! I'll post some more stuff.

Okay, I didn't realize that there was that difference, my mistake. Then they won't be quite so bad, but probably still a job best left for overnight.
