Here is my friend's system

AMD Sempron 1.8, 2.0 ghz? single core
Onboard video 32mb
80GB HDD
512 Ram
1 free agp slot

all he plays is diablo, baldur's gate, icewind dale, age of empires, MS word, internet

Can he play WoW if he upgrades to a agp vid card. I have a shitty geforce fx 5200 lying around, can he get decent fps 30+ i'm sure he will need to upgrade RAM too. Thanks

If he likes Baldurs Gate, tell him to buy PlaneScape: Torment now (runs on the same engine and is just as good if not better game)

He should be able to play Rise of Nations (and the expansion). Similar to AoE.

I played it on a P3 1GHz, 512 MB RAM, and an ancient Matrox card and was fine.

Yeah I had a friend who played wow on a FX5200, but he had pretty bad frame rates. He got a 6600GT instead. This was in 2004.

Edit: Sorry 2005

If he wants to play WoW then get him the best video card you can and I would also recommend upgrading to 1 GB of ram.

Theres really need to spend that much if he just wants to play WoW. Seriously why tell him to spend 600?, maybe 200 at most for a 7600GT and 2 gigs of ram. Otherwise the other video card recommendations, used 6600GT, 6800GT or 9800 Pro, are just fine.

If you want a super economy rig, and you're close enough to a Fry's, they have a Celery 460 combo for $59. 1g of DD2 can be found for almost nothing. Don't know if WoW supports Win2k, so, if not, dual boot to XP if you have the space....

As far as bang for the buck, and you'd be able to upgrade the mobo and proc, find a deal on a 8600gt.

You'll have a smokin' fast rig for under $200... Wow would run at max with this rig.
