What can the U.S. export to help our economy?

Basic economics: the more you export, the richer you are.

Since we don't export physical goods much anymore, that belongs to Asian countries, then we need to find something else to export. Otherwise, we'd just be consumers and send our dollars to foreign countries.

I was thinking about the software industry where we most definitely have a lead on above all other countries. Microsoft, Apple, Facebook, Google, IBM, Oracle all possess the best software engineers in the world.

If we can sell our software such as CRMs, ERPs, security software, operating systems, etc. to emerging countries that will inevitably need them, then we stand a chance of competing in the open market for money. Software are mostly subscription based so revenue is always streaming. The profit margin is also high. And the great thing about it is we'll still have most of our natural resources because we aren't making anything physical.

What can the U.S. do to help us achieve this goal? Open up more visas for highly talented engineers?

We already do. Microsoft, Oracle, Intel, etc have locations thru out the world in R&D, manufacturing and sales. I was involved with implementing Oracle ERP for an Israel company. Too bad, plenty of countries out there also have talented software engineers. If you hadn't noticed, a lot of software development is outsourced.

That's only going to work if you make those companies pay their tax in the US and they don't outsource their workforce to China.

Some Investment Fund will just buy it up then Export the whole thing to China. :p

Which is the bigger problem. You are correct that Exports are very important, but as long as there's an exodus of Domestic Production which turns into Imports(a double Negative whammy), creating Exports becomes extremely difficult. The only Citizens who benefit from the current arrangement are the very Wealthy and until the general population recognizes this, the Majority of the Citizenry will continue to struggle ever harder to maintain their Lifestyle.

The dirty little secret that most Americans aren't aware of nowadays is the fact that our number one most important export, by a country mile, is inflation. It used to be manufactured goods. Now it's inflation. A lot of Americans have become aware since 2008 that the U.S. economy is a walking dead, basket case economy, but they aren't aware of just how precarious the situation really is.

When the chickens come home to roost, this lousy economy we've been suffering through the last few years will be remembered as "the good times".

Where do you get this silly notion from? In terms of dollar value... the U.S. exports more than any other nation... even China does not come close. It just takes a lot less people to export a $100 million airplane versus $100 million worth of plastic crap from China.

Of course if you want to export $100 million worth of plastic crap.. then you need to find people willing to work for $1 or less per day along with a way to nullify all environmental regulations. That way the end product will be competitive on the global market.

That's the Republicans economic plan.

I wish that were true, but it's not and hasn't been for several years. America isn't even #2. Red China is #1, followed by Germany, followed by us.

We are firmly ahead of China and Germany on imports though.

Things we can export (that other nations won't necessarily want):

Action movies.
Violent Rap Music.
Frozen Pizzas
Tea Party 'Tards. (Heck, we'll give them away for free--addition by subtraction.)
Jesus Freaks (mega-dittos)

Nothing really. We gutted our infrastructure and anyone can flip burgers. Sure there are a few things, but nothing which is really a game changer. The Reps want to give tax cuts without strings, and the Dems want programs. Neither has seriously proposed creative solutions such as targeted tax cuts for returning good paying jobs to the US which in turn can make products we can export. We're pretty much screwed.
