What can RAID do for my soon-to-be-purchased gaming rig?

Oh, so from my other thread, I've gathered that RAID makes it possible for data to be split into multiple HDs at the same time for better performance... correct me if I'm wrong please...

So what does this mean for my gaming machine? What kind of advantages will I have over a non-RAID rig? Is it worth it to increase my expenses for this?

Thanks for your input. 🙂

Click the "Storage" tab and read the Raptor RAID article, good info that applies to any RAID0 setup.

It improves level / map load times but not FPS. Chance of data loss doubles since if either drive fails, you lose the data on both drives.

But HDs don't fail too often, do they?

I've had this P3 600mhz pc for five years, and the hard drive just crapped out on me just 2 months ago.

Thanks for the article, gonna read it now! 🙂

I read the article, and I don't think I'll be getting RAID, don't need it for gaming.

Thanks very much, that was helpful.

Nope, RAID will do nothing for a gaming rig. If you were doing data storage, or high end video editing, or just about anything that is file size intensive, then RAID is worth it. Otherwise, just something to brag about to your friends.

Yes they do, they can fail now or tomorrow or 2 years from now or 10 years , there is no scientific formula to calculate exactly when your drive would fail. Its mechanical, they have a MBTF but it doesn't mean it wont fail before that.. technology gets better, but still like one out of a million would fail before it even reach MBTF

I wound up being really glad I had IDE Raid built into my mobo. I had an 80GB drive that was almost chock full, and I was able to get the same model Western Digital drive just last week for $29.99 from best buy after rebates. So, I backed up the stuff I had, popped in the new drive and connected both to the Raid controller. Now i've got basically one 160GB drive for $29.99 (at least that's how I see it). 🙂

I know he won't be getting raid, but it's FYI for him to see what real raid is like. 😉

Jose

Not to insult you... But I thought it was funny enough and applies in many situations. See my sig. 😀
