What can of car should I buy?

Hi there. I'm looking at buying a new car towards the end of summer(hooray! my first one!)

At that time, I'll have about $6000 in cash as a down payment which I think should make for a decent car but I'll need fairly reasonable monthly payments.

Since I have fairly little credit to speak of, I need to have my parents co-sign the thing which adds another criterion into the whole equation because they're import-loving people who have all but said straight out that I'd have to take my chances at getting rejected for a loan if I decide on an American car...

Okay, that's where I'm at. What should I do?

With $6000 you shouldn't need anyone to co-sign if you have any credit at all.

edit: What price range are you talking about?

You sorta need to tell us what the car is for, what you're planning to do with it, etc.

From what you said, I agree with your parents.

Well, I'm looking for something smaller and decently conservative but sporty too.

The couple that have crossed my mind are the Ford Focus and the MR Spyder...and the TT but that's only in dreams...wet ones at that...

The car will be used mostly on the weekends or for late-night grocery-getting/movie theater-going as I live in a pretty crowded town and going to school or work is usually by foot or BART.

<< Ford Focus >>

Gag, you'd get a Focus over an import like an Accord/Civic or a Toyota? Okay, I'm done with this thread...:disgust:

Oh damn. I wanted a can of car too! Would you have to add water, or it it not concentrated?

The Mazda Protege is a car you should consider, IMO. Damn fun to drive---with the 5-speed anyway. And the MP3 variant should be even better---more power, better handling, etc.

Wasn't there a $6750 Kia Rio being talked about floating around the hot deals forum?

THough, the ford focus isn't too bad of a choice.

The Civic is the easiest answer to the question because I know it's reliable, fuel efficient, affordable...basically Japan's answer to Nazi Germany's Beetle

Still though, I'd feel a little weird driving a car everyone else has. What's worse, owning one of those might lead me to ricify it like everyone else in hopes of being "unique" :( and then no one would be happy...

AmusedOne: I think if I were to get the turbo Jetta/Golf I'd just go for the TT...What are those priced at anyhow?

The Civic is only an option if you are boring, lack taste, and blindly follow your fellow man like an ignorant sheep.

In this case only, I agree with the guy above me. I'm going to buy the car and use it only for the next couple years and then sell it or give it to my sister so I don't really need something that practical.

For all the people who say Civic, what do you think of the Del Sol? Seems like the same reliability but a little sportier...then again, a little too girly.

Bah...Where can I find the perfect compromise of price, sportiness, and masculinity?

Don't be a girly man please!!! Unless that floats your boat ;)

Civic is OK. I didn't get one. I didn't like it that much to get it plus everyone and there uncle's monkey's got one. I'd go with maybe a Mazda or Mitsu compact car. Or if you want the hyundai. At least that way you'll get more car for your buck.
