What can my laptop play?

i just bought a laptop, and while i am not a hardcore gamer, i do like to game a lot from time to time. so i was wondering, what are the newest games i can expect to play with this graphics card?? i was also wondering if tribes :vengeance will work.. maybe even half -life 2. i just want to get a game i can stick with and run smoothly. so yeah =)

graphics card: mobile intel 945 express

thanks for all your time and help

Tribes: Vengeance is based on a late build of the Unreal Engine 2, so it should at least run. UT2004 works pretty well on GMA 950 (your card) but Tribes: Vengeance adds a bunch of shader effects. You might have to turn down some settings; I don't know.

If I were you, I'd Google reviews of integrated graphics chipsets. Yours is the "GMA 950" by Intel. I know there are at least a few on Anandtech.

source games run pretty well at 800x600 on the GMA950 at medium detail. I get about 40FPS in HL2 EP1. Obviously it supports the DX9 stuff, but it runs a lot smoother in DX8 mode (Source scales back all the way to DX7 if neccessary, but then it looks like original half-life)

I hate when people say "oh nothing will run on that sh!t". While this may sort of be true, if you lower the settings and resolution to something low enough it should run.

My friend has one in his laptop and he can run some of the newer games on it.

This is probably true for most games but there some games that will be unplayable even if you lower everything all the way down. I have seen someone try to play Need for Speed: Most Wanted on a GMA 950 and even with every single setting at minimum, the FPS was consistently under 20. And then there are some games that will just plain not work or give rendering errors, like Battlefield 2 or Battlefield 2142. And these games came out in 2005! I heard Quake 4 works but only at the lowest settings and it is barely playable, although the latest patch allows you to use static lighting so hopefully that will be better. Source games will work, too.

I found this online in two seconds: http://www.extremetech.com/art.../0,1697,1821806,00.asp

I am surprised that Painkiller does not even run; I have played that game with medium settings @ 1024x768 smoothly on an X600 XT, which is quite slow (4 pipelines) and it doesn't even utilize normal mapping, IIRC.
