Sueann Johnstone, 2917 Windermere Oak Lane, was traveling south on U.S. 301 in her 2003 Ford when she stopped in the center lane and activated her hazard lights, the release shows.

Is it possible the vehicle broke down and she couldn't manuever to the shoulder?

I'd think this is the fault of the guy who hit her since she is supposed to have turned on her hazard flashers...

I think I remember a similar one where a woman stopped her minivan in the middle of a highway to check her tire or something like that. It was near a curve too, or something, and the 18 wheeler that hit her really didn't have a much time to stop.

Since she was killed she must have been out front looking at the engine or something? I don't think she could have died had she been in the driver's seat. Either way dumb move stopping in the middle of the highway.

Ever heard of coasting? You're going 70 mph, your car doesn't break down and you instantly stop.

Even if the car does break down, you should have enough forward momentum going at highway speeds to maneuver to the shoulder methinks.

A body laying there.
A brake malfunction causing one to lock up.
A broken tie rod end.
A broken ball joint.
Trans lock up.
Heart attack.
Stroke.

I'm sure there are more.

Something similar happened to me on the way to the beach yesterday... Going down I275 South some douche in a Odyssey minivan decides to cross 4 lanes of traffic going 15mph... I had to swerve to avoid him. There is no explanation for this except stupidity. If your car breaks down/runs out of gas, WHY would you not pull over on the left side of the road if were already in the left lane?

One of my belts snapped one day while I was in the hispeed lane passing an 18 wheeler and I still managed to pass the truck and get to the side of the road. Albeit with some blaring of horns and what not.

Belts (besides the timing chain) are not that important and you can drive for a few miles with out them.

What does that mean?

It means that I was going to word the question differently then I changed my mind and re-worded it a different way, but I forgot to take out remnants of the first version.

i remember reading a study that said that some people will just stop when something goes wrong with the vehicle. they panic and instead of pulling over they just stop. even though they can coast to the side or even just drive.

My car died on the highway once and I had to struggle to get to the shoulder. I barely made it but it was hard 'cause I never had to ever drive without power steering and this was a surprise to me. Also, Atlanta rush hour crossing 4 lanes of highway is hard.

Yeah cars with timing belts are actually magic and don't even need them.

dunno about the middle of the highway, but I did have to stop and pull off just to take a picture of this: http://img213.imageshack.us/im...395/0823071337ahu1.jpg

Is that a statue of Michael Jackson? It looks like it.

its some church with a huge statue of Jesus out front coming up out of a lake (which is a bit low in the pic since it hasn't rained all summer basically)
