What can I use to make fridge smell better

I just moved into a place where the fridge and freezer were closed for 3+ months and both grew mold. I have cleaned both out with a cleach-based cleaner multiple times and left baking soda in there for the past 2 weeks. Both still smell moldy and have caused the entire place to smell that way. Any ideas?

You might try cleaning it with a paste made of baking soda, and follow up that cleaning by wiping with vinegar.

Or perhaps it just needs another good thorough cleaning and a chance to air out.

Ugh. You may be out of luck unless theres some sort of plastic deodorizer out there..... plastic has a bad habbit of absorbing odors. Not sure how to cure that one, other than LOTS of soap and hot water? I dunno.

You could, uh.. make your fridge have an accident.. and then have them them replace it.

Not that I would ever advocate such a thing. 😉

I pay for it, so it won't be having any accidents.

Time to go buy some incence and candles and shit.

That sucks.. Hmm..

Try Azraele's idea of baking soda paste, but let it sit on there for like.. an hour.. let it absorb some of those nasty odors. I bet that will help. It might take a few treatments, depending on how bad it is.

Of the *entire* fridge?

Get a fresh and ripe Durian fruit from the Asian store, stick it in the fridge and you'll forget how bad the fridge used to smell.

And you can eat it after, too!

Yup.........

That's what it is going to take, regardless of what you do... unless only part of the fridge stinks.. lol

Heh, I figured w/the general age group of OT being right around 18, nobody would say ^^that^^ but you beat me to it. 😀

SarcasticDwarf: Clean your nasty, skanky-ass fridge out more than once every three years and it won't stink like a sewer in August!

I had a similar (well probably not THAT nasty) fridge in my place when I moved in, and I did the same thing - mixed up a light bleach and water solution, scrubbed down the whole thing... then did the baking soda and hot water solution and did it again... then I think I did the same thing with windex for the 3rd round. By the end, it was pretty much fine, but it probably took about an hour total. (I let it sit for a while after each time)

Get the Mold and Mildew Cleaner from Tilex.
Bleach is ineffective against mold. You may want to get a used fridge from a used appliance store. Mold is very stubborn.

Depending on how bold you feel, it may help to unscrew a few things. Our fridge went to mold and maggot world after a month away from home. I scrubbed and scrubbed and scrubbed, then I unscrewed some part and scrubbed those (like the bottom of the freezer was in fact a plastic tray -- guess what was growing between it and the real bottom of the freezer? ditto for the back). I used Fantastic with Bleach mostly, and let it run for days at max coldness with a few of those flo-through baking soda boxes.

Eventually (a week? more?) the smell became mostly tolerable so we started using the fridge again. It doesn't smell at all now (1 month or so since we got back). Oh, and I put the baking soda things close to the vents that deliver the cold air in (in the path of the air, in fact). Good luck!

Sodium hypochlorite will kill just about anything, including mold.

The reason it may seem ineffective against mold is because.. mold spores are airborne. Wiping your moldy wall down(for example) may make it look clean for a while, but unless you make your wall unfavorable to mold growth, it will come back.

His fridge isn't growing mold, though. It just smells like old rotten sh!t.

Yup. I have cleaned all the easily accessable areas at this point.
Yeah. Sounds like it's going to take some elbow grease.

Take it apart as much as you can.. make sure you get every little crevice. That's where the odors are probably hiding.
