What can I use as a plinth for my PC?

Ok, this is a bit of a strange request.

My pc case currently sits on the floor under my desk in a room with thick carpet. I'd like to stand it on something more solid. This is for asthetic reasons mainly but I'd like to think it might help keep things cool by allowing some air to pass under the case too.

Is there by any chance something designed for this purpose? Or can someone reccommend a material that might do the job?

Thanks!

um, a piece of wood/plexiglass/plastic?

Your case isn't going to be any cooler though...

Yeah, I thought as much.

And like I said, I want it to look good so I don't want to just get any old piece of wood or plastic. I'm looking for something designed for this or a similar purpose. Or something that with a bit of lateral thinking might do the job.

My fiances desk came with just such a thing. basically it amounted to a board with 4 feet that matched the desk. Looked nice, but she got rid of her desktop computer and exclusively uses a laptop, tossed the stand out. Anywhoo, I'd imagine an office supply or furniture store would sell this type of thing for a reasonable price. Hopefully without having to purchase a desk as well.

Aside from dander and dust reduction and assumptiously negatiting the possibilities that he may have a bottom air grille or fan.

Hey OP, how about completing and making public your Member Profile - so when you sling a word like "plinth" around - we can check and see what planet you zoned in from...

Plinth, eh? Reminded me of Leonard Pinth-Garnell... Hah - hah!

I use a pair of Rubbermaid step stools under mine - about $10. for the pair at Walmart. I used only one for a while but my case started to develop curvature of the spine... ;)

Or something like this: http://www.computergate.com/products/item.cfm?prodcd=XSTSY02

or this: http://www.3m.com/us/office/myworkspace/sol_cpu_stand.jhtml . Best price I found on this one was at the HP Small Business store. Abt. $23. shipped.

Now it makes sense.

BTW, you can edit thread titles in this forum. You could use "base" or "stand" so the knuckle-dragging victims of the gov't school system here can understand you. Not one in 10 (heck maybe 100) that actually read your thread title would know what plinth means - some out of curiosity might have read the OP to see if they could find out.

You'll get more hits. Or is that why you cleverly used it - as brain-dead Yank repellent.?. ;)

A good reason for using a "plinth" is to keep your system cleaner. The higher you get it off the floor, the less dust it will ingest.

It seems like the proper term is 'cpu stand' but I think I'll stick with plinth; maybe it'll take off. Never mind physics cards, the new must-have hardware is the plinth!

Anyway, I think I've decided. I'm going to get some toughened glass used for shelving from my local hardware store and stand it on that. Most of the cpu stands linked above are just too ugly.

I was surprised at how well the Rubbermaid footstools look on my PC. The new dark gray color nearly matches my case. If I took a pic from just the correct angle, they would look lilke one piece.

I went and purchased a piece of solid pine (due to the light color and you can basically stain it as you like) and made a nice rack for my CPU's to sit on. I also made it so I can store extras under neath it like cables, hubs, etc.

"American made product" - great we're making pieces of plastic...

"No assembly required" - Phew I was worried
