My buddy brought his computer into Geek Squad because it was giving the 'ol "Click of death." They also said the hard drive was fried, but I told him I would install a new one for him to save the money.

Anyways, I was wondering how to find out what hard drives I can put into this laptop? Here is the info of the one currently in there:

IBM Travelstar, 4200 RPM, 40GB, Model IC25N040ATCS04-0

I'm not very aware of how laptops work in this way, but am I to understand that ATA-6, or newer, would not work in this laptop? At the very least I would like to find a 40GB, 5400 RPM model to put in there for him. Would any of you guys be able to link me to a hard drive with the above specs that would work in this laptop? Or provide me with some info so I could find one as well. All of Newegg's drives are ATA-6 or ATA-7.

Thanks in advance.

Pretty much any standard 9mm (height) and 2.5" (width) hard disks will work in your friend's machine. The ATA-X spec is just for speed - if the drive is rated to operate faster, it should have no problems 'stepping-down' to the slower transfer speed of the onboard ATA controller of the laptop. (I think my Inspiron 8100 operated at ATA-5 (100MB/sec theoretical))

How about this one?

5-year warranty, reputable manufacturer, 5400RPM, nice space upgrade, too.

Nice choice to help your friend out and advise against the Dork Squad wallet raping! :D

Nope, they're just rated at different speeds. Like I said, anything higher should have no problem stepping down, assuming your controller is capable of ATA-5 max.
