What can I put in the trash can to keep it from smelling like a trash can?

Kitchen waste smells bad, but I don't want to take the bag out to the curb until it's full. D:

A dead rat will overcome that trash can smell... overwhelmingly.

Don't put that kind of stuff in your kitchen waste receptacle. I put compostables in a separate container and dump when full in my compost pile. Other things that will start smelling bad get a special trip to my outside trash receptacle, that's harvested weekly by the truck.

Around here they supply you with a second trash receptacle (dolly/bin) that's emptied weekly if left out. This is for basically compostable waste. Stuff that falls in that category that I don't want in my compost pile (I grow vegetables), I put in that dolly/bin.

Nothing. Shit and flowers still smell like shit. If you can't compost(Brooklyn), use a smaller trash can, and take it out more frequently. My trashcan is a 5gal bucket. I use grocery bags in it, and it goes out once a week or so, but I compost food stuff.

We usually have a big kitchen trash and a smaller plastic groceries bag when we cook to throw out the stuff that will stink right away.

Febrese or vinegar. Vinegar wont give you cancer like Febrese does, but you might have to sign a waiver form when you buy that stuff, have your ID ready.

Soak it with lysol spray. Febrese isn't a disinfectant so it won't actually kill the stinky stuff.

Everything that goes in the waste wheeler that goes out to the curb is in a sealed bag. The waste wheeler stays in the garage to keep the racoons from getting into it so keeping it from smelling bad is kind of a priority.

Are you talking the trash can inside your home or outside? If inside, the obvious solution is to take it out more often. If outside, well, who cares - you don't really smell it anyway.

Get a tightly closing foot-pedal type can. Mine has about 40 lbs of waste fermenting in there and I can only smell it if I open it to pack something else in there.

Do you have a garbage disposal unit? Food waste going down the drain instead of in the trash can may help.

That's why you should only use small grocery bags for kitchen garbage. Use 2 if you have to... one that can go away earlier.

Buy a 10-liter trash can from Bed Bath and Beyond for grocery bags used as trash bags - they're the perfect size. Other kitchen waste like cartons and papers can go in a separate trash bag.

You're welcome.
(do I sound like you?)

On a separate note, I'm glad we have trash collection twice a week. I don't know how people who only have it once a week deal with stanky-ass trash sitting aside their house for so long. You must hold your breath and pinch your nose when you put it in that huge receptacle. Maggots also come to mind because even I've had them.
