What can i plant in my garden?

The only place where i can plant my garden is in a spot where i get sporadic sunlight. Maybe 30-45% sunlight.

Im thinking of making a vegetable garden, and some cool flowers. Anyone have any suggestions that can work under those lighting conditions?

Hostas, certain vines, etc. Just drop by your local home depot and look at plants that are shade tolerant 🙂

Hostas, ferns, and Impatiens will all do very well in low light. The first two are perennials so will come up each year and get bigger over time whereas the Impatiens are annuals and will crap out at the first frost.

Can't help you with that. I just grow stuff that's nice to look at while having a beer on my back patio. 😀

I have a certain kind of plant they put in direct sunlight, they plant it alot in Jamaica and Hawaii. If you know what I mean 😀

Bananas? Papaya? Mango? What?

I'm not following you. 😛

Most (not all) garden veggies and stuff like berries require at least 6 hours of direct sunlight. Should find at least a few veggies that'll grow well, as well as a plethora of shade and partial-shade loving plants.

Ok, here are some plants you could try (but check if they are appropriate for your region, I'm in Oregon so they might not be ideal.)

Columbine (Aquiligia)
Astilbe
Begonia
Coleus
Cyclamen
Bleeding Heart (Dicentra)
Foxglove (Digitalis) (Don't grow if you have kids, it's poisonous.)
Ferns of all sorts
Coral Bells (Heuchera)
Hosta
Impatiens
Fuchsia (hardy bush type or tender hanging basket types)
Iris
Lilies
Lobelia
Monkey Flower (Mimulus)
Primrose
Violas/Pansies

I'll think about what kinds of veggies might work.

Oh, and many many veggies do great in pots if you have a sunny porch available. There are even small bush type cucumbers that I've grown in a hanging basket very successfully when I was in an apartment. Lots of fun.

If you got birds and squirrels running around, get something to cover the plants until they get too big for them to dig up. I saw a robin pull out several small flower plants my neighbor spent most of the preivous afternoon planting. Squirrels like cutting down tomato plants (not eat, just cut down), even full grown ones. They also develop a taste for egg plant. They will wait until it gets big then swipe it. Get some chain link fencing and use it to protect your plants.

You're supposed to grow it in your closet, not outside. 😀

Order a plant catalogue from someplace and there'll be a chart telling you what grows in your part of the country and how much sunlight/shade it needs.

Cucumbers grow in bushes? (stops and glances down below his waist). Well, I'll be damned. You're right. 😀

It grows better outside. 😛

I have a bunch of cherry tomatoes growing in my backyard. It goes well with salads or just eaten alone dipped in your favorite dressing.

But then you have to watch out for bugs, especially the ones in DEA uniforms 😉

If you have warm conditions and bright sun (Even if you garden is shaded alot), many types of garden plants will thrive in 40-50% direct sunlight. Most vegetable plants from what I see cannot handle 10 hours of direct intense sunlight. One common plant that like that is tomatoes. Many tomato types can grow in the sahara if they have enough water. Many will also do well in 50% light too but usually not as well as the ones getting intense sunlight.

go to a garden specific store or nursery and see what they recommend. Most vegetables will do well in 50% light (I mean like light for 50% of the day, say 4-5 hours direct)
