These are a given, of course. You also have to try "Bilar" which are these little candies you can buy in any convenience store. They are the best. You can get caviar in a tube, too. Like toothpaste. I grew up on that stuff. Try "Kallas" brand - in the blue tube, very mild, very flavorful. And the best hard bread IMO is "Falu" brand - in the yellow package, called "råg rut" which means rye bread IIRC. Marabou chocolates, too. The food over there is great, yet expensive. Have a good trip :D

Edit: ALmost forgot my favorite Swedish candy - "Daim". It's like a Heath bar or a Skor bar over here in the states, but tastes better.

One: Aquavit is pretty hard to find here in the states

Two: I should have distinguished that the swedish women are natural blondes for the most part. ;)

The best swimming goggles the world has ever known.
Not like they're hard to get in America, but STILL!

It's very strong alcohol. Tastes like Scope. The Swedish have a saying that describes it, but I'm not sure how to spell it. I think it's "bommul kring järta" (most likely spelled wrong) which in English means "cotton around the heart." :D

What you can get in Sweden that you can't get in America is a first hand look at how socialism can affect society. You will see a much more modest gap between the haves and the also haves but not quite as much. You won't see poverty, people begging on the streerts or people without medical care. You will see a beautiful country but a different country. You will get a chance to ourgrow some assumptions you have about the world.

Hmmm, well this isn't my first time out of the country . . .I have been to several other countries, but not sweden. I'm not exactly sure what assumptions I may have that I will outgrow, or even how you can possibly imply that I have assumptions that need 'outgrowing'.
But yes, this will be my frist time in a socialist country, all though I did live in Minnesota for a lot of my life, and that was kinda close ;)

Bomull kring hjärta... that is how it is spelled...

Your got most things in your first post... i really don't know what to add...

mmmmm "ahlgrens bilar" in sweden we got a saying about those to, bara ett sätt att stoppa dom, i munnen... Which means: only one way to stop them, in your mouth... but the funny part get's lost in the translation... bilar is swedish for cars...

Sorry about the spelling errors - I never type Swedish, only speak a few phrases here and there. When I do speak it, I tend to mutilate it with my flat midwestern US accent. :) My Dad grew up in Stockholm and I still have family there, so I've been there six times, and know all the good stuff to buy. I forgot to mention before one of my other favorite swedish treats which is Läkerol, especially the menthol licorice variety (the red box). Good stuff. :D

pOntif, I suppose it's possible to sleep through anything, but one way alot of people know things is by experience.

Did I mention we are all the same? But my intention wasn't so much to pOntificate as it was to suggest, not only to you, but to others, what travel can bring, a broader perspective.

Moonbeam: Why do you speak in such a cryptic manner? Sleep? Who's sleeping through what? You, me, or just people in general? Furthermore, what does that have to do with learning through experience? We're all the same? Where did that come from?

Your convoluted communication style aside, I agree that travel may bring a broader perspective to people, and that experience is the best teacher. I'm trying to figure out if you are being random on purpose, or if you are actually trying to convey something novel here.

pOntif, go to Sweden and have fun. Many of the people that post here are rabidly pro American and have never been anywhere. Travel can provide an unexpected perspective and distance from the daily, in country, brainwashing that goes on throughout the media. A change in perspective can come, 1. from new information, 2. silencing of a drumbeat of pro American propaganda, so that the effect has a chance to wear thin, 3 a combination of the two and the longer out of country the more likely this can become. Since I chose you to say this to everybody I had to assume that you had not traveled which was wrong. Since you had traveled I had to then assume you might not have been out long enough to wake up. Thirdly I had to assume that you were defensive and a bit narrow minded. Instead you proved to be rather thoughtful, persistent in wanting to understand, and generally sincere. I know these things because I have experienced them. So the assumptions I referred to are the mind set most Americans can't avoid having as Americans and the sleep is the insufficiency of #1 and #2 plus the reluctance, and the we are all the same is if true and I know me then I know you.

I hope this is clearer now because I owe you. I assume things that turned out to be untrue to make a point. It probably wasn't a good idea. Sorry.

Don't forget the lovely 70% tax rates or the stagnation of the economy.
