My brother wants to know what kind of upgrades are available for his IBM computer. Other than adding more RAM, what do you think? I'm thinking that there are no processor upgrades available. Do you think its currently using onboard sound and video? Suggestions please :)

Thanks,

Adam

If you read the memory part of the specs you'll it says 8MB is dedicated to onboard video.
It's got onboard video, and I can't see why it woudln't have onboard sound to.

My roommate thinks he K6-3/400 with a Voodoo3-3000 was playable in quake3, you woudln't really play online...but you could go single player games... A K6 is the king of crap for Games...but at higher resolutions it's video card limited anyways...so you could get a nice PCI video card and see what you can get out of the system (3dfx V3-PCI or V5-PCI..)
And more RAM...

those are the only decent upgrade you can do.

For windows 2D apps type stuff a K6-2/500 is more than enough power, it's just for games adn 3D apps...

If a newer BIOS for that board will support the K6-3+, that would make an excellent and inexpensive upgrade. I just popped a K6-3+ in my system that was running a K6-2 500 and it has made a HUGE difference - benchmarks are anywhere from 50%-80% higher, depending on the test, and my Seti times dropped from ~18 hours to ~8 1/2 hours.. :) You can get these chips for $47 from PC Liquidators without a warranty, or for $54 from TigerDirect...

Anybody know if this system will support the K6-3+?

i personally wont consider upgrading a K6/2 500Mhz to a K6-3.
i would only consider adding another 128MB SDRAM to the system

If you look over on pricewatch, you can get a duron/mobo combo for $150. You won't be able to overclock, but a 700 duron by itself would be a good increase.

I would say that would be your smartest move, instead of increasing ram, but then again you will need a new video card, you can pick up a V3 2000 for probably ~50 making your upgrade to around 200.

Just my two cents
