it's got an amd xp 1600 cpu, 1 gb pc2100 ram, an agp slot but currently using onboard video.
the rest of my family has computers more powerful than this so i can't give it away.

agp is basically dead so i can't turn it into a gaming machine.
it's got a 500gb hd so it can be a file server, but i live alone now so i keep all my files locally.

i can only think of using it as a spare pc, or guest pc.
can i toss in a video card and make it an htpc?

It would be perfect for Windows Home Server.

You can start it as is, and use it as a File server (NAS) plus media center.

In time if you need more space you can add a bigger hard drive to join the current drive and the OS would integrate them into one big storage no need to install copy or do any thing but to add another drive and check a menu entry.

You can log to Microsoft and download a 120 days free trail version, http://www.microsoft.com/windo...wshomeserver/eval.mspx
