what can i do with Pentium 133mhz & 16ram

basically i would like to turn this into a file server, or in my terms a computer that can hold 4 high end hdds have a nic, and not reboot itself when someone needs to take or move files from it.... any help would be great
 
Buy/find more ram for it, then install debian-stable on it without X. Set up SAMBA or NFS on it depending on weither or not you run Linux or MS on your main computer(s).

Stick a big HD in it, put a UPS on it, and stick it in a corner and blow the dust out of it every other year or so.

Oh ya. check for and install security updates every month or so. Can do it via ssh so you don't have to waste a keyboard and monitor on it.

Then see if you can get over 300 day uptimes on it.

The biggest limitation is the 16 megs of ram. It'll probably work well on a 10MB Ethernet Network, but if you run 100MB or more then you probably want at least 64MBs of ram or so on it.

If it uses EDO ram, check out ebay or mabye a computer recyclers/thrift store for some older computers you can use for parts.
 
ive heard of all your advice before but have never actually done it myself, soo it went over my head i will do research on it and figure it out thanks to further answer some questions its i believe according to gateway phone help slow ass sdram dimm or sodimm might be the same, but thats what i labeled on the case when someone gave me it and i would be storing MS files for now and prob move to storing some linux files in future on a network of 100mbs a sec i believe w/eth wire
 
I don't think ram speed matters much. The only issues I see as far as ram is concerned is if it's EDO ram. Nobody makes that stuff no more and if they do it would be way over-priced, were as a 128 megs of sdram is like 25 dollars.
 
If you want to use this for network storage with high end drives,
get a Promise ATA100 controller, install Slackware 9.0 /9.1 and set up samba.

You should be able to get away with only 16 megs of ram.. Just turn off some unneeded services
and make sure you have about 200 megs of swap space.

thanks for advice, does it have to be slackware? any other linux distro, and im not familiar with samba, but ill assume ill use an old 500mb hdd for the system to run on with possibly 2 pci cards one 133 and other 100 and ill most likely upgrade the powersupply with something newer and more juice

Since there is not much that this box will be needing to do slackware would keep everything pretty minimal. But if you don't want to be bothered with slack's added complexity, you could also do an install of debian stable. Debian has excellent package management. There are also plenty of other distros out there that could be used instead, so if you look around you might find a distro that you like more.

Don't worry, it's not that hard to get started once the PC is on the network.
 
Or you could use that as your main rig. My main rig right now is the same as yours, but has TWICE the ram!!! I'm living the good life😀 ...Really, that is my main rig 🙁
 
nah ill pass on that main rig option, my main rig is in pieces on the floor, testing parts and other crap, hopefully soon back in action to play some damn games 🙂, anyway thanks for advice maybe tomm ill get around to testing out a few linux options ....

Can you say...Oversized PaperWeight??

Make keychains out of the parts. the cpu & ram chips make great keychains.
Hard Drive Platters make good cup coasters.
Melt down the rest of the motherboard and cards give some chick a free breast enhancement.
 
I used a P150 with 32MB + FreeBSD + NFS + dnscache for over 2 years... It had 100GB of file storage, and handled the load of a home network without anyproblems.
 
ditto to mucman's rig, but 64 mb of ram here. The promise card is a great help for speeding up disk access.
 
I use clark connect. I have installed this on systems as meager as a p133 w/32mb BUT IT WAS ONLY USED AS A ROUTER.

I have set up full featured setups on p166 with 64 and they ran fine using version 1.3

I am running my server on a p2 400 with 512MB and a 120GB HD as my server using version 1.3. I would upgrade it to 2.0 BUT that would intail lugging a monitor to where the sytstem is set up.

EDIT I also have two older Packard bells sitting on my desk right now. IF you have free memory slots I can see what they got for memory.
