What can I do ? (too hot)

Ok, im pretty sure its the video card that is too hot. The system is MSI ti4200, msi kt3 mobo, axp 2000+, wd 40 gig hd.
The problem-
I can do anything on the computer perfectly - when the side of the case is off. When the case is on, under heavy gaming it crashes to the desktop. Any game will do it, and so will 3dMark2k1. I installed a few more fans and now it takes a little longer to crash.

So my question is, what should I do ? What do you think its the culprit ? I could get a video card cooler if you think thats the problem.

Thanks a lot

Sometimes just 'more fans' doesn't accomplish what you need. Room temp air must move into the case, around the components that are generating heat, and then out of the case carrying the heat with it. If you added a fan to the front of the case, be sure it can get enough air into the case - make sure the plastic front of the case isn't restricting airflow. If the fan is pulling air through the perforations in the metal case, consider opening up this area with a nibbler. Provide sufficient exhaust fan capacity, you probably need more than just the fan in your ps. If you have plenty of air moving through your case already, maybe its not getting to the hot spots to carry away the heat - consider mounting a fan internally that will move the heated air into the airstream that will be carried out. Examine your case layout to determine how the air should move through it and work from there.

HTH......................

thanks for you lengthy reply, i will try some of those things, opening up the part of the case where the fan is. Its sorta like hard metal so im not sure what i can do with it. I was considering a video card cooler but im not really sure how they work. Maybe ramsinks or something.

don't games get fragmented with artifacts before crashing when it gets too hot?

not with mine. Lets say im in the middle of 3dMark2k1, it will just crash straight to the desktop and tell me that it couldnt go on safely or something. reliably might have been the word.

It doesnt sound like your videocard isnt overheating. If thats the case, a better videocard cooler or ram sinks wont help your cause. What are your case/cpu temps looking idle/under load?

im not sure its a comp built for my cousin so i dont have it here now, and i never checked the temps. I think i need to try ramsinks because it already has a fan on it. Ive never really messed with a video card tho so im not sure exactly what to do.
