What can I do to stop/reduce video "tearing"?

I'm just wondering if there is anything I could do to reduce the tearing I see in divx/xvid DVD rips during playback. The tearing is seen when there is a lot of motion across the screen; it really detracts from the viewing experience and is apparent on either LCD or CRT. Is this a problem that indicates that I am ripping with too much compression (currently trying 1.4GB divx/xvid rips)?

Or is this a codec problem? I'm running ffdshow (20041012-sse2) on all my machines and they of course all exhibit this problem.
