What can I do to quiet computer?

Edward Lee

I have my lovely and trusty Tsunami Dream by Thermaltake.
The only problem is, it's loud. I'm not going to spend money on water cooling. What else can I do to make it quieter? Will replacing the fans with quieter ones help? What are some brands/make/model I can buy to help with the noise?

Thanks

Try unplugging all the case fans and running the system with the case open, to see where the noise is coming from. Chipset fans, video-card fans, PSU fans and hard-drive motors are some of your possible culprits. Western Digital is dragging their feet about using fluid bearings, so listen to your hard drives and see if they're developing bearing whine on you.

i got some little rubber gromits for mounting my case fans. helped my noise out and cost about $1.00 not a drastic change but definitely worth the cost. the vibration of fans can be amplified by metal cases especially.

Case noise..First replace all 80mm fans with 80mm panaflos (i have 30 japanese ones (the best) LMK) then get a fan controller and 5-7volts them.

Video card noise, if you have a highend one, needs a NVsilencer ($24)

CPU noise needs Zalman CPNS7XXXX or thermalright xp120 with a nexus 120mm fan... first is cheaper.

PSU noise needs a PSU with a 120mm or 140mm fan. Lots of good ones in the 120mm realm... Super flower 140's are you best bet.. $65 and awsome 32A 12 volts rail.

That's it, about $140 and you'll be almost silent...youdefinity won't hear it from 10 ft..you may notice drive noise (I did 😉) and you'll need smartdrive 2002's @ 60 bucks a pop.

To quiet down your pc, decrease fan rpm, remove some of the fans or apply more AS 5 to your pc if the cpu is overheating and the fans are trying to cool it down.🙂

yeah..they really are.. but you get what you pay for. rubber vibration dampening mounts in the screw holes..good times.. and the prices are a bit lower at various e-tailers...the manufacturers website is always more expensive

I have same case as you and replaced those louda_s TT 120's with some 14dba SilenX's. They are absolutely inaudible. The Silenx's push/pull about 60CFM at 1800 RPM if i'm not mistaken

I love their fans (have 4 in my case), but unfortunately the two 120's that Edward Lee wants to replace go in a bracket in the Tsunami. Aweful design in my opinion. So he can't use those silicon mounts on the 2 120's (unless he wants to get brave and drill holes in his Tsunami). BUT he can use them on his PSU. Those mounts are sweet 🙂

My oc'ed AMD 64 is all on air (silenx fans throughout- modded my psu with an 80mm) and it is completely silent! in a room with hardwoods and very little furniture. I just love silence.

yeah he'd have to take out the silicon mounts or if he wants he could go panaflo.. i mean they make good stuff also.. fairly quiet.. push alot of air Speed: 1700 RPM Air Flow: 68.9 CFM Noise: 30 dBA or even the Vantec Stealth 120mm Airflow: 53 CFM Noise: 28 dBA Speed: 1500 RPM

Hi i got same case, Thermaltake Tsunami Dream, windowed with 90mm fan,,,,, its not only 2x120mm fans i got side window version with a 90mm fan in it and its acceptable but the lies of thermaltake to claim the fans are all 21db so making the 120mm fans same as my side fan and silentcat 90mm heatsink fan is wrong.

Im sick to death of the case fans mainly the 120mm, i want the silent x and i see they dont have sensing wires but read elsewhere some have 2 wires some have 3 wires than some are thermal controled, ideally i want 3 wires constant speed ones that i read are amasing but to the part where you can fit on our cases as of brackets that hold the 120mm fans, thats untrue, these brackets are held to case by 4 screws same pitch as 120mm fans so you can simple unscrew and fit fan directly to case with its rubber mounts or use the things i use bellow, infact i will remount using brackets with them behind it.

Vantec Vibration Dampening Kit for Case Fan

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/...an_Accessories_34.html

All i want to know is, i got specs of the silentx fans rated at 14db so the higher cfm models but how many cfms does my 1x 90mm and 2x 120mm (each) put out, i know rpm and rated db(thermaltake lies) from box and manu site.

I ideally dont want to lose to much airflow.
😕
