What can I do to make my Win2k desktop look cool without installing any 3rd party software? I've been looking around for icons but the ones i've seen so far are only for XP....

they all come around from thier "i like 2k cause it doesn't look like playdoh" eventually :p

you can use custom icons but i don't think you can do it to the same degree that you can in xp

I like how you can customise the look of XP but I don't like how it comes with a bunch of crap I don't want/need. It is also a heck of a lot slower on my compuer too.

First step:
Install on a domain. 90% of crap instantly removed.
Second step:
Get XP :)
Third step:
Third-party, EULA-breaking software.

umm... i can change/enlarge my icons in win2k

right-click properties - - effects - - check off "Use Large Icons"..
Look for high res icons on diffrent customize sites or google it. Add a nice wall paper to match the icons.

hmm... what else, thats about it. If you really want to change the explorer interface you have to get 3rd party software :p

Its WIN2k "Professional", pretty much designed for the business world. IMHO WIN2k is very stable and fast, by changing the styles or installing third party software is just going to slow down the system or even make the system unstable. I love the way WIN2k the way it is.

I used 3dmark, since it's easy, to test with when I was messing w/ my shell and all.

WindowsBlinds: yes, and I don't use it.
Litestep: no (+~200 3Dmarks, FYI; 9675 being normal in explorer)
MBM: yes (-~100 3Dmarks)
Rainmeter: no change

It's all the stuff that integrates into Explorer that'll screw it up (I've used a lot, just to, in the end, get a command prompt open in the current open directory in explorer). I can't uninstall half my programs correctly now (no uninstall apps and add/remove programs doesn't work), I can't get to my NIC's properties outside of the command line, the folder sidebar in explorer doesn't work...after that it's little stuff.

...but it's still fast and stable as a rock, which has kept me from reinstalling. One of these days I will...

it's called win2000 pro

don't mess with desktop

one simple thing to do is get a picture of your liking (people or pets work well),
and use it as a "texture" for the 3d pipes screen saver. i think it has to be in windows bitmap format
the image gets wrapped around the pipes and is quite interesting to see.
