I just moved into my new apartment, and I cannot stand to use 56k anymore! I called up a DSL provider, and they said that I do not qualify for DSL because my phone lines are fiber optic, and DSL requires copper based phone lines. From my little knowledge on this subject, I thought that fiber optics is an advanced technology compared to copper lines. I was just wondering if there are any high speed internet services that work on fiber optic lines.

Thanks!

there are some technologies that use fiber for residential services. i'd call up your local exchange carrier (LEC) and see what options are available. bell south, verizon, gte, pacbell, whoever it is that provides your phone line...call them.

I would head on over to DSL Reports to see if you qualify for any kind of high speed access. I know they do DSL, but I think they do cable as well. Just put your address in and hopefully you will get some kind of DSL/Cable access in your area.

YOu could always go ISDN.

<Laughs from the crowd>

ALthough I wouldn't. I had it when I used to telecommute. The connection was Always on, but it wasn't worth the money the company paid for that extra 200% bandwidth.

<< Ich bin ein Berliner >>

- you are a German pastry?

Anyway, the dsl that I have comes in to my house over copper, but it gets to my phone lines over fiber. So I don't know....

Ich bin ein Berliner is actually a quote from Eddie Izzard, a British Transvestite comedian..who is halarious by the way. I wont go into the whole thing, but he was making a point that it's not what we say, but how we say it. In this case JFK was trying to...just watch the damn show :)

I called verizon, and they said the only high speed residential services are ISDN and DSL.
Oh Well...
The thing that sucks the most is that Cablevision's Optimum Online service is available in my area, but my building contracted DirecTV to provide television service. I called Cablevision, and they said they will not provide cable to my unit until the contract with DirecTV is over. I asked the super how long the contract was for and he said ten years!!

oh jeez!
