What can go wrong when flashing your BIOS ?

i understand that you shouldn't flash your bios for the sake of flashing your bios. however, if it is necessary to do so, what could possible go wrong? i ask this because many ppl say "FLASH AT YOUR OWN RISK!"

Also, if u get a bad flash how do you recover from it? will everything be lost?

thanks

the worst case scenario is the pc freezes up or the power supply fails just after the update erases the info from the bios chip before writing the new info. you're then left with a non functional bios chip & hence your system won't boot & so you can't try reflashing the bios.
your system is hosed till you get a new working bios chip! :disgust:

Generally you short out a jumper on a motherboard to recover from a bad flash. By doing so all your setting in your BIOS will be resetted. But this trick don't work 100% and there is always the chance that you will simply have to get a new board 🙁

but how could the power supply all of a sudden fail? and what are the chances of screwing up my bios chip?

thanks again

if you follow to the letter the instructions for flashing then there should be little chance of anything going wrong but never totally discount the forces of nature & pure bad luck!
