What can be the problem?

Well I'm trying to set up a computer for someone and I'm having troubles.

Right now they do not have internet, I'm not sure if that matters or not for the network.

There is a shared hard drive set up, and it's accessible by all the other computers, but when I put it into this computer it doesn't recognize it, but if i plug a different computer in it works fine.

I tried checking the ip address and it gives me a different ip address than the other ones it gives me like 168.xxx.xx.x, while the others give me 192.168.xxx.x, I can't remember the ip completely.

I tried changing the network card and I still get the same trouble so I'm guessing it has to do with a setting. Anyone have a similar problem? Sorry about not being descriptive enough, I'm really not sure how to describe it as I'm not too good with networking.

Please describe the set up:

1. How many pcs
2. How are they networked
3. What OSs are they are running
4. How do they connect to the internet (or will in the future)
5. Which (make model) NIC,switch, router, modem

For networking to work properly you need working pcs, network cards properly installed, good cables, at least a switch or router/switch or a hub. A quick and easy guide is available at ezlan.net. Once you have a working network, then move on to the internet connection and sharing it.

168.xxx.xx.x, such an IP means that the computer can not find a DHCP server (in most End-Users sysytems it is in the Router) and thus can not be assigned a working 192.168.xx.xxx.

Can be the cable, loose jack/plug, or Router's setting for DHCP.

I just can't figure out why it won't work on one computer.

there are 4 pc's it works on 3 of them.
We will be putting in a dsl modem which will connect to a router than to a 24 port switch (not sure why they want to make it so complicated).
There is also an external hard drive which is connected to the switch.
They are all running windows XP
It is a Dell computer.

It sounds like it's a router problem because I tried both changing the cables and even replaced the network card. Why would the router work for the other computers and not the one? By the way it is cat5.

based on what I have seen...I would hire a pro (assuming this is a buisness?). It's well worth the investement

I am still not clear on how the the network is set up.The pcs connect to a switch or router - make and model?. There is an external hard drive - is it on the network connected directly to the switch using RJ 45 (network) cable OR is it connected to a pc using usb cable.

On the Dell, can you open up a command prompt window and at the C:> prompt type the command - ipconfig - and make sure you are getting a valid IP address that should be exactly similar to the IP addresses of the other PCs 192.168.XXX.XXX except for the last three numbers. If it is 169.XXX.... thats an error msg indicating improper configuration. If you have a switch (instead of router), you may have to assign (manually) an IP address at TCP/IP setting under network connections. To make sure the network card is working, in Control Panel>System>Hardware tab>Device Manager>Network adapters check to make sure it is correctly identified and does not have a yellow question mark next to it.

Hope this helps.
