Thanks to a lot of you guys on here, I purchased a brand new Toshiba 27" flat screen TV today. It looks great, but now I need your help once again. Right now my PS2 is connected via the Y/W/R RCA cables. I use the PS2 as my DVD player as well. But I plan to upgrade to a better stand alone DVD player(by the way, would I benifit from a progressive scan DVD player with my TV? Model number 27AF42, or would it not since its not HDTV?) As well as at least a home theater in a box if not something better. So should I just upgrade my PS2 cable to the Svideo cable and save the component for the new DVD player when I get it. Or should I just upgrade my PS2 to the component cable? And if I go with the later option, do they make a component cable for the PS2 that offers both the red/white audio cables as well as a digtial audio cable that i could use to hook up to a home theater setup?

PS2 has composite and s-video output, not component. Your TV has s-video input, so i suggest you use that. Don't waste your money on Monster, get an s-video cable from Radio Shack for 10 bucks, it works just as well. To answer your second question, no, your TV has to be High-Def in order to use progressive scan, so there is no point in paying extra for a DVD player that supports it. Check out Toshiba's players, SD 1800 can be had for about 100 bucks and it's pretty excellent.

Update: Oh yeah, i believe the PS2 also has optical audio out. Use that to hook it up to your receiver, it'll make a world of difference.

Yes, but dear lord, those cables are a major ripoff. You should be able to find something like them online.

The PS2 DOES support component out. I have the cable hooked to my Toshiba flat screen.

And he is right to say that you wouldn't benefit from having a progressive scan DVD player unless you have a TV that supports it. Only HD and HD-capable TVs do. Yours doesn't.

Yeah I kinda figured aboutthe DVD player, just wanted to be 100% sure.

Zap0602, if that question was to me, I can't say if the monster cables are good or not. I was just providing a link to a component cable for the ps2

Buy s-video cables for the PS2 (InterAct has a set for $9.99, you can get them at Best Buy), use the component inputs for DVD.

I have the same setup on my Wega, & both PS2 and DVD look great.

Guess i was mistaken then. Go ahead and grab a component cable, just not from Monster.
Radio shack has a cable that fits on the PS2 end?
PS2 uses standard cables.

Monster Cable is a gigantic, well-oiled scam machine. Their cables make no difference over other cables that cost 1/4 as much. Think BOSE... of cables.

That would be one way to do it. However, if your receiver has component switching, you can hook the PS2/DVD up to it and then switch between video modes with your remote. What receiver are you using?

As of yet I don't have a reciever, that is a future upgrade

PS2 uses standard cables.

What exactly do you mean by standard? The end that connects to the PS2 is kinda odd shapped, like a big USB plug or something, I was assuming that end was specific to the PS2.

When I had my PS2 for a month, I used a set of the Monster Cable s-video cables and later switched to the Sony component cables. Couldn't really tell a big difference between the two, the component cables might have had slightly better color (brighter/warmer and less bleeding). But since the component cables were only $20 from CompUSA and the Monster Cables were over $35 everywhere, I'd definitely say go for the component cables. At the very least I would get a decent set of s-video cables, should make a nice difference over the composite RCA ones you're using now. BTW this was used on a Toshiba 43" HD compatible tv.

I used Sony's component cables for my PS2. Paid like 15 bucks on Ebay. The colors do looks a bit better than composite.

Thanks guys, I will go to the store and check it out. Either get the interact Svideos as mentioned earlier or possibly the sony component also mentioned earlier. But I still need to know about the sound options. AS I said, right now I am just using the built in speakers of the TV. But soon, prolly after christmas(if I get some money for the holidays) I do plan to get a home theater surround setup. So for now i would prefer that the cable have the Composite red and white audio cables, but I would also like it to have a optical or digital or whatever connection I would need to connect it to a home theater setup.

So that way i don't have to purchase 2 sets of cables. But I just checked the compusa website and 20.00 bucks for the sony component cables sounds decent enough. So i could get that right now and then change over to the Svideo with the digital audio link later on.

Like I said, I have never used anything but the composite RCA cables so I can not attest to the quality of other cables. A few people are saying that monster cables are not worth the price and that seems very understandable to me, since theyare very expensive. But it seems like the people using the sony or interact cables are only noting slight improvments.

My advice for you would be to use the component cable for video and a standard RCA audio-only cable (red/white) for audio. The downside is that if you already use component for your DVD player, you will have to manually unplug it from the back of the TV and plug the PS2 in every time you want to use it. The upside is that when you get a receiver, you will just plug component from DVD/PS2 into it and switch between them with a remote. I don't think the PS2 has coaxial audio out, so you will use optical out when you get a receiver - and coaxial out from your DVD player, which surely has it.

As for the cable brands, once again, don't waste your money on Monster. There is only a small difference in quality between s-video and component, and paying four times as much for the cable won't make it any bigger. Don't get discouraged from buying component cables though - the difference may be small, but so is the pricetag.
