What cable modem are you using with your Optimum Online connection?

Unless you purchase some POS, I seriously doubt that you will notice much improvement and or difference swapping out cable modems.

Isn't the speed depends on the ISP?
At least my cable is capped around 1.5mbit :(

This is a unique issue for OOL users, virtually no other cable company gives users so much bandwidth. That said, I've used the 3com and the Terayon, heres my take:

The 3com is usually slower, although less prone to packet lose, 3com is no longer making modems however.
The Terayon is usually faster, this is the primary SUPPORTED modem by OOL that acheives 8Mb/s.

Although the Toshiba has the same chipset as the Terayon, OOL does NOT support it, and therefore can not do future firmware pushes, nor can you.

So go for a Terayon, and if not, a Motorola SurfBoard.

I would just use the one the cable company will sell for real cheap. Cox here in Vegas sells the COM21 modem for 25$ and it works just fine.

Unfortunately Toshibas appear to be unstable. I purchased one and it would NOT work for anything in this world. Turns out that my provider had been having problems with Toshiba, and even went as far as to not support them for my node cause they dropped connections for no reason. Mine actually lit up like it was online, but never would receive or send. They could hit it, but for some reason it just wouldnt reply back. So i've totally stear clear of them since then. I took it back and picked up a Motorola SURFboard SB3100 and it's worked flawlessly since.

I have OOL and I use the Motorola Surfboard (the one without the cutoff switch in the front) and I always get 1Mbit up/5Mbit down. Sometimes late at night I can get 6Mbit down. I'm very happy with the Motorola.

It depends on where you live around. Some nodes just give better speeds than others, and the modem won't matter at all. Surfboards are the main ones that Optimum comes with, the wiz seems to have them on the shelfs and take them off all of the time. Whatever one you get you will get plenty of speed. I'm using a terayon.
