Hmmm, I'm surprised by all the people who dislike ATI. I've had good luck with their products -- not the fastest but they all seem to work well. I've had the original ATI AIW Pro (RagePro), TV Wonder PCI (works great with my Geforce2 MX), ATI AIW Rage128, and ATI AIW Radeon.

I even think they have great driver support -- my ATI AIW Pro (RagePro) is working great in my backup Win2K system.

The brands that I would shun are:

Diamond -- worst driver support of any company. It seems like as soon as they brought out the MX300, they dropped support for it. They did the same thing with the MX400.

Highpoint -- I had extremely bad experiences with their HT366 Ultra66 controller card. Caused one system to blue screen while booting up and on another, I kept getting data errors (CRC) whenever I tried to install games from a CDROM connected to it.

Non-intel chipsets, Optiquest and all other weak monitor manufacturers, AMD (Hey, sue me!), Maxtor/Quantum (WD rules, but I seem to have a lot of enemies now, lol), Yamaha (their cdrw's stink), generic ram (prices means little when things fail) and most of you guys (j/k) :)

I'm sure I could name a lot more, but.. I think it would be more interesting to see what people DON'T shun.. :)

nvidia
creative
asus

i can only say i really shun these 3...shun meaning, even if they came out w/ the best product for the money, i would STILL REFUSE to buy their shizite.
there's other companies i stay away from as a rule of thumb, but if they put out a good product, i'd buy it.

for motherboards, i shun everything but asus.
for monitors, i shun everything but viewsonics and sonys.
for ram, i shun everything but micron (crucial) and mushkin.
for CD-Rs, i shun everything but TDK24X or TY manufactured.
for burners, i shun everything but TDK and plextor.
for cases, i shun everything but antec.
for cpus, i shun everything but AMD.
for video cards, i shun cheap brand named NVIDIA cards or outdated cards.
for sound cards, i shun everything but creative.
for speakers, i shun everything but klipsch and logitech.
for harddrives, i shun everything but ibm, maxtor, and quantum.
for network cards, i shun everything but linksys.

as you can tell, im a sucker for brand stuff, not willing to go cheap, and very singleminded.

Epson: The 777 printers suck big time. It took me a long time to get mine fixed. HP laser and inkjet printers are heavenly.

Microsoft: Only WinME. It should have never come out. What a waste of time and money.

VIA: Even though I've had good luck with most of their chipsets, plenty of people have not, and the way they push around SiS and the stupidity of the current P4 bus licensing issue among many other things makes me want to slap VIA around a little bit. ;)

If their products improve, I will buy their stuff.

Any company that hasn't been listed yet.

AMD. God I hate them. ;)

Memorex (desperate last resort product only), assorted crappy names like PCChips, EMachines, etc.
Rambus
IBM IDE HDs
Norton software except Ghost.
And my likely next board is a VIA KT266A based mobo and if it is as problematic as the KT133 (agh USB) I'll add VIA to the list.

You're implying that you automatically like Brainwave, QPS, Mirai, misc OEM burner with Burnproof then. TDK and all these manufacture's use this! Sanyo engine. Look at the button placement. May have different cool and cute faceplate, but you'll see that headphone jack, LED and button locations are exactly the same.

Digital research(for its psuedo-Promise IDE controller that crashes under D3D for some reason)
PNY
Procomp(worst mobo I ever owned)
VIA
Compaq
HP
Packard Bell
Kodak digital cameras
Fuji digital cameras
Sierra(Though I always end up buying good games published by them;))
S3(For saying that the VirgeDX was a 3D accelerator)

CREATIVE LABS CAN SUCK MY LEFT NUT!
I had three live cards die in one year. Changed over to aureal based and it works fine now. The creative goes and tries to sue the smaller company that makes a better product.

I will never buy a creative product again.

i know they have the same engine with burnproof. i still dont like them since i like TDK because i like the blue tray (it looks nice), and i like plextor because i consider them one of the best at CD-R drives. its like they set the standard since everyone always compares other brands to plextor. so its not that i hate the technology, its just that i personally have other factors besides performance. thats just me.

Epson (for their damn designs...argh...printheads not built into the cartridges, and not easily accesible for manual cleaning! If it dries or really clogs, you have to waste 1-2 cartridges on cleaning alone?! Can't even just buy a new cartridge and expect it to start working again? ARGH)

HP (for their POS USB 8200 CD-R/RW drives...too many first hand experiences with buffer underruns and just plain inability to create CDs)

ASUS motherboards......have a KT133A board that locks up in BIOS cuz it keeps insisting that the CPU FSB and multiplier are wrong. Going entirely jumperless next time.

Rambus....pure evil
