What brand pcie sata controller? No Raid, linux compatible

What should I be looking for in a sata expansion card? I don't need raid. Is there a certain chipset (eg Intel) which is more reliable?

And what kind of support does linux have for sata expansion cards nowadays?

I think I had a cheap card with Marvell 88 series chip planned to put into a future machine of mine:

Marvell 88SX7042 has 4 ports, and should cost around 70 dollars when placed on a PCIe card from a no-namer. Linux support is good according to user comments.
