depends what kind of burner you use to burn them, if you use nec there shouldn't be any problems if you use on it is not good. hell, the burn quality is so bad on liteon that it's even unreadable on the computer. liteon ain't what it use to be, now it is the number#1 suck on dvd media.

I think it really depends on the DVD player. My DVD player has no problems with any brand although the cheapest brand I've used is Ritek. I normally buy name brand media and I've never had any problems. My burner is an NEC 3500.

The current undisputed champion of media is Taiyo Yuden. It will not be labelled as such at B&M stores. Fuji's with a Made in Japan label are usually this media. Maxell Made in Japan is also high quality. You can buy it online. BUT get it from a reliable store such as newegg or meritline as there are knockoff clones that suck and will be labelled as TY.

I use a desktop recorder and use Ritek Ridata G05 8x DVD-R Hub Printable media with good results. BUT, YMMV.

I don't mean to be insulting, but that brand name retail stuff is an utter waste of money.

Go to http://www.supermediastore.com

Ritek, Prodisc, and Supermedia's own brand work just fine on about any hardware you can find. I just picked up 200 DVD-R Supermedia branded discs for $45 shipped.

Taiyo Yuden DVD-R is the best and most compatible in set-top players. You can tell it's better quality than everything else just by looking at the disc (and they're more rigid than other brands).

As a side note, you specifically said -R, so the answer is definitely Taiyo Yuden. They are the most compatible and almost always the best burn quality If you asked about DVD+R, it's usually Taiyo Yuden, but some players get better burn quality with Verbatim. Still, burn quality in itself is not the same as compatability (as some people like RobCur would have you believe -- although it looks like you've been around here enough to know what every post of his is 100% retarted). Taiyo Yuden seems to be more compatible than Verbatim regardless of slight differences in burn quality, but Verbaim is also very good media.

And don't listen to the people who use generic media. The people who have burned hundreds of DVD-Rs over the past few years generally know that generic media is a terrible idea. Even Ritek, which is supposed to be the best of the cheap media, can have problems. Back when buying generic media could actually make a significant price difference, I got hundreds of Riteks. Within about 6 months most of them had read errors. I have 50+ movies on Ritek DVDs which are now useless and can't be recovered.

I used to buy from SuperMediaStore, but they're a pretty questionable retailer. Look them up on ResellerRatings. At best, they screw up a lot of orders. At worst, they intentionally short orders and substitute worse media sometimes.

Rima.com is a reliable place with quality media. They have Taiyo Yuden media for under $0.50 a piece. There's no excuse for getting generic.

DVD-R media is so cheap now. The very best is $0.50 and the very worst is $0.25. I certainly can't see why you'd get trash to save a quarter.
