What brand of dvd-r cds should I buy?

If you are looking for quality DVD Media, I have always had good luck with Ritek discs in my Plextor PX-708A

the specs of that particular format. to the end user, it's the same. doesn't matter.

Taiyo Yuden owns all.
Unfortunately, it's not very cost effective. If you have an 8x DVD+R drive, 8x DVD+R Riteks are not much more expensive than 4x DVD-R Riteks.
You can find a 50pack of Ritek 8x DVD+R Here

Taiyo Yuden is good. I use Maxell and have a stack of 50 printable that was acquired for $75 incl shipping. If I could not get Maxell, TY would be my next choice.

If you hear some folks not liking Ritek, it is probably folks with experience with their 1x media a few years ago. It sucked. Ritek's 4x media gets high marks from folks using it at DVDr Help. Ritek seems to have fixed all of the issues in 2003.

Summary, Ritek, TY, Maxell are all good.

tayo yuden is rule, I get an error rate about 1/10th of ritek media's and 1/50th of no-name media (this is from seen with k-probe, I do not know how accurate this thing actually reads errors, it might just like the tayo yudens more, but I get around 1000 PO errors a disc, whereas nameless ones (CMC magnetics mostly) have gotten about 40 to 55k PO errors, nothing out of hand (you can get quite a bit) but I'd rather be on teh low end than on the high end, and the price difference here is 0.5 ? for such a small diff per disc it aint worth it.

I've been having great luck with Memorex. I get a 25 pack at Walmart for $38. I've burnt hundreds and hundreds of memory CDs, now after dozens of DVDs I'm still happy with them.

As far as the difference between DVD+R and DVD-R, I think DVD+R has a metalic stip between the tracks or soemthing to help the laser stay on track. I've heard that DVD-R tends to be a bit more compatible with stand alone players and DVD+R tends to have a little bit better integrity for data. I'm not 100% sure if these things I've heard are accurate though. Especially since it seems to be the luck of the draw if an older stand-alone player plays +r or -r (newer players are less picky.)
