What brand of blank DVD media do you use?

I'm trying to burn a file that's around 4600 MB. I have a Philips DVD+R that is supposed to be 4.7GB. But when I checked the blank capacity it's only showing 4.38 GB, and the program won't let me burn the data on it.

Is that normal for DVD media to be showing less than its rated capacity?

That has happened to me before as well. I can't explain why, but on VErbatim and TDK disks it happens.

That's because the 4.7gb is measured as 4,700,000,000 bytes

In reality, 4.7GB is a lot more. The 4.38GB you're seeing is in reality the 4,700,000,000 bytes. It's completely normal. The same principle applies to hard drives. 1TB is rated as 1 x 10^12 bytes

4.38 x 1024 x 1024 x 1024 = Approx. 4,700,000,000 bytes.

Media has absolutely nothing to do with this, all DVD+-R/W's will be listed at 4.38GBs

If you want to burn your 4600mb file, try compressing it or splitting it into two archives ;)

I have good luck with K-Hypermedia and Imation.
Never use Memorex, it's just a pack of coasters with a fancy lable.

Psh. The only GOOD media is Taiyo-Yuden DVD+R's and Verbatim DVD+R DL's :)

DVD-R in general are sucky, and all other brands aren't nearly as good as TY.

This is because 1 KB = 1024 bytes

I thought so. I actually tried verifying with Google's calculator. I put in: 4.7 GB to MB and I got 4 812.8 megabytes. So, I initially thought that 4.7GB was around 4800 MB.

Crap.. that means I have to archive it in volumes and decompress it again if I want to use it. Damn, inefficiency! Tsk.

If you really wanted, you could use a dual layer DVD, but they cost about 4x as much for less than half the space.

I don't think that most people don't understand that companies like Memorex, Maxell, etc don't make the discs. They label them and sell them, that's all. I've bought Memorex and they've been anything from TY to Imation to Ritek. (Info taken from DVDFab logs)
