Which companies laptop do you like and why? I'm looking to buy one. So far, I'm in love with Fujitsu's style, but some people tell me not to get it.

Sony has the best features for the money, Toshiba and HP are good as well. I dislike
Toshiba's (stick/lever???? for lack of terminology) mouse, it drives me nuts!

Sony is the only laptop that has firewire interface, not that I use it, but you never know
when you may need it. I dislike Sony's network input, it is behind a cheezy piece of plastic
flap (which has already broken!).

Anything smaller than 15" is too small a screen for me.

How much is your budget?

What kind of specs are you looking for? screen, processor, RAM, hard drive, CD/DVD/CD-RW/56k modem/NIC, etc.?

Would you mind a heavy laptop if it's LOADED?

I like laptops from Dell, IBM, Sony and Apple.

I like IBM thinkpads. I have a Thinkpad 560 from 1996. It is still running strong and never needed any repairs. I also have a newer compaq, but I use the IBM much more. It may be old, but it is not loud and about 1" thick. It gets used several hours each day taking notes for law school.

Thinkpads rock, but new ones are mucho dinero. I'd rather have a G4Ti for the price (awaits the Apple Haters). :p

EDIT: Not voting until Toshiba is up there! :|

I have an older P200 Sony VAIO, a Toshiba Tecra 8100, and an IBM A22P. The screen is excellent on all of them, however, without a doubt, the IBM is the superior machine. Granted, it's a 1ghz P4, it has 512mb ram, 30gb hdd, 15.1" screen (I think), but it's just an extremely well-built machine. The screen is absolutely superb. It simply feels more "industrial" than the others.

If you want the best-bang-for-your-buck-quality laptop, here's what I would consider:

1) Buy a "new but old" (last year's models) direct from IBM through their eBay store. The best models are the ThinkPad T series but if you don't mind a little added weight consider the ThinkPad A series also. This deal has been around for a long time and several Anandtechers have gone this route and have been nothing but thrilled about their purchase. One thing I don't like about IBM laptops is they only have an eraser head cursor, no touch pad (Dell offers both).

2) Dude you're getting a Dell. If you can wait a few weeks, Dell should have another slew of specials piled on top of each other with coupons. The best model is the Inspiron 4100 but if you want one of the most powerful laptops on the planet get the Inspiron 8100. IMHO the Inspiron 4100 is the perfect balance between weight/cost/performance, if I were to buy a laptop today this is what I would buy. The only difference is I'd save a few hundred $$$ compared to the average Joe ;)

3) If you're a CostCo member or know someone who is you can't beat this deal. Remember to pay using an Amex CostCo card so your manufacturer's warranty is doubled for FREE and remember CostCo has a very liberal return policy.

i am the only person who voted HP. i have a toshiba right now, but what i dont like about toshiba is their laptops cost a lot, their new laptops are frighteningly slow (alladinT chipset is to blame) and they dont support my old laptop very well software wise (speedstep still doesnt work in XP because of a 440mx bug and they have done nothing to fix it).

HP may not have the most decked out laptops. but in general their laptops are styled well, and their service is top notch plus they are relatively inexpensive compared to the others. i can get a human when i call them within 3 minutes, and their repair turnaround is 3-4 days not 2 weeks like sony. Dell's just well dont look very nice , they feel cheaply made , like a generic laptop. I call it mcdonalds toy style feel. The components are very nice, but if i pay $1600 for a laptop i want it to feel like there was some design put into its casing. besides toshiba makes laptops with geforce2gos also so why not just buy a toshiba over a dell (yes i know the radeon 7500, but i'm not a gamer so its not a big deal to me) IBM i would like, but they cost too much (ibm x22 is soo sweet). Sonys are also nice outside of their crappy customer service but outside of that the laptops are great and have lots of features. their FX series isnt very good though, basically the athlons and durons, cheap feel, and heavy. Also expensive too.

Bingo. I like Fujitsu's designs but they're just not as popular as the fab four (Sony/Toshiba/IBM/Dell). I also recommend checking their outlet store, you can get some mad discounts on refurbished Fujitsu's.

Also check out Delloutlet.com where they sell refurbished Dell's.

Believe or not.. I was about to buy it than the 10% off code didn't work.. The two codes I found on Techbargains only work in the "software and Peripherals" section. =(
