I'd skip Stranger in a Strange Land.

on that list, I'd go with A Clockwork Orange, but you should also consider picking up some Ayn Rand (The Fountainhead or Atlas Shrugged... or We the Living if you're looking for something shorter)

You can skim the last 60 pages.

Edit: are you trying to catch up on "literature" or reading for fun or what?

Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick
Not complete dystopias (the term you're looking for) but still great books set in not so perfect future. Brave new world is a definite though, good book

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (and the rest of the series if you enjoy the first book)

a basic must-read for any geek

A Clockwork Orange was one of the few books that I stopped reading before I finished. I hated the way it was written (with the pseudo-Russian/English slang blend).

Actually, nearly any selection from this list is worth reading. Approximate 1/4th there I still have yet to read, but most are excellent choices.

Another excellent list; this one includes a reader's poll listing as well.

the reader's list is a lot better than the board's list... stay the fvck away from James Joyce (and if you are going to get in bed with the man Irishman, read Finnigans Wake, not Ulysses).

I've read a little over 3/4 of the books on that list... most are good, but I look at any list that doesn't include Ayn Rand with suspicion. heh.

A great deal of literature is personal preference, of course. Joyce is superbly gifted, even though I am not terribly fond of his subject material and settings. That is one of the beauties in uncovering a great work for oneself - personal opinion can vary a great deal, and often is the case that one's own opinion may differ from that of the accepted.

Always maintain one should read, and decide on their own.

I voted A Clockwork Orange, but I highly recomend Ishmael by Daniel Quinn. It's probably the best book I've ever read.

Ha, I'm the only one in for Conrad. :)... I'm just basing it on how long it took you to read 1984 :)

I would actually suggest Farenheit 451, I think it would go along with the theme :)

WE, by some russian author, i can't remember his name. presumably orwell was 'inspired' by him since the stories are similar.

i vote for clockwork orange though, that's a fun read. makes the movie make more sense too.

War of the Worlds. Or maybe start the next in the 1984 series, 1985
