What birth control success %'s really mean

So recently I took a human sexuality course and when we covered contraception we talked about how safe each method was for preventing pregnancy.

Say a condom is 99.9% effective. This doesn't mean that out of every 1000 times a condom is used 999 times the girl doesn't get pregnant. Efficacy statistics for birth control work like this. It actually means that in a given YEAR with couples that use a condom, and use it PERFECTLY, out of 1000 of those couples, 999 will NOT become pregnant, if using a condom every time they have intercourse that year.

(I'm just using a condom in this example, the principle applies to all forms of birth control),

I never knew this before. (waits for all the ATOT virgins to claim they knew this already since they use XXXXXXXXL Magnums and their penis fires so hard it can knock an aircraft out of the sky from 30,000')

No, you can use a condom 999 times, and then on the 1000th time you have to use the pill as well.

Hey, if your penis is 2 feet long you'll pass out from blood loss every time you get an erection.

On a second note, I didn't know that. I thought it was for ecery 1000 times you had sex you'd get pregnant.

yah, so something that's like 99.0% effective, 990 couples per year using it perfectly everytime they had intercourse would be safe, and 10 would become pregnant, etc.

and % is based on manufacturer-sponsored study.

take BC for example, i think there was a separate study showing % effectiveness based on race; i remember blacks have % lower.

Yea I think there was a study that put the BC pill in the low 90's to high 80's when you take into account EVERYBODY that would use it. Not just those that are hand picked by the drug companies.

Thats why I am not shocked when I hear someone got pregnant when using the pill only. I have personally known 3 girls that happened too and many others I did not know but heard from while in college.

Condom + pill = about as close as it gets, short of just not having sex. :p

I think "everybody" accounts for women who missed a day or two, or women who smoke or do/have something else that counters the effect.

correct. It's because generally blacks don't use the birth control PERFECTLY. There's several levels of use, Perfect, Nearly Perfect, and Poor if I remember correctly.

Hey mister stats man... any idea how well plan B works? :(

Not sure if that's a serious question or not...

The media tends to use Plan B and Morning After Pill non-specifically. Two options:

RU-486 ~Mifepristone~ is a steroid that can be used as an emergency contraceptive. If you take it within a small window after sex, at a minimum of 10mg it prevents ovulation.

After that, up to 49 days it becomes an abortion complete with partial contractions etc. <---Graphic Can't remember the time window here, but once the fetus/egg/flying monkey
[Not mocking, there's just not uncharged language I can think of] is attatched it becomes an "Abortifacient." Ugly word isn't it?

Emergency contraceptive pills may contain higher doses of the same hormones (estrogens and progestins) found in regular oral contraceptive pills. [These pills] are licensed for use until 72 hours after sexual intercourse.

In summation, they're both "Aww crap..." pills. Assuming you take them quickly.

I don't get it. The OP simply restated an interpretation of the meaning of the figures in a different way, but did not actually change the meaning at all. Six of one, a half dozen of the other.

Edit: Then again, 1000 times in one year, not too many people are up to the task.
