What benefit does flashing to dd-wrt have?

Just curious really. My router is supported and everything seems simple to flash, I just don't know what it really changes to be worth it.

On the flip side, I flashed my Buffalo WHR-G125 and have a few issues.

The first was my mistake. I did not do my homework. If I had, I would have known before I flashed that I cannot go back to factory firmware. I want to stress that this is not the case with every router.

My second issue is that since I recently flashed to the latest and greatest, my router reboots randomly. There is now a newer release out and the fix may be in it, I'm not sure. I believe I can flash back to the version I was using prior, and I would assume that my stability will return.

In my case, I did not need the extra features and I did not need the extra power. I wish I had stayed with factory firmware.

Just letting you know that it's not necessarily all a bed of roses.

I would imagine that stability and reliability changes would depend on exactly which maker/model of router you start with.

I think that Buffalo encrypts their Firmware, and that is what causes the problem of re-flashing with the original Firmware.

email Buffalo support they might be able to send you a buffalo factory revert firmware.

Once you restore the original you can Flash again with whatever was stable of the DD-WRT version.

boomerang's experience isn't typical, so don't get discouraged. My WRT54G v.4 was never as fast and stable as it is now with the Tomato Firmware. I wouldn't consider ever using an 3rd party firmware capable router with the stock firmware again.

I'm not sure I'll bother for quite some time. I just don't have any reason for it quite yet. I haven't had any problems with the stock router, and until this semester of school ends I don't want to be screwed out of internet if something goes wrong.
