Compass bank. I would not recommend them based upon the fact that i do my banking online and for months now the site has been very on/off. Very frequently there are various different errors and for a bank of this size to have such problems long-term is really pretty pathetic.

Oh, and in Canada my bank is Royal Bank. Their online site has only ever caused me one error in two years of online banking. With my student visa I've had for years the interest rate is around 10% or something (pretty damn good for a student card which I've kept raising the limit on), and they have a lot of locations in Canada. I like.

Of course you like :)
Canada's banking system is far superior to that of the US. One reason is that there are only 6 major banks. The US has hundreds.

TD bank is a piece of horse sh*t and here is why:

5 months ago I got a new job in the US making above what the average adult canadian couple makes. Before I came down here ith excellent credit between me and my wife we applied for a $3k loan from TD to cover her laser eye surgery. Not only did we actually have the room on our visa cards (were not maxed) but neither of us have ever missed a payment. The laser clinic was actually recommending TD as a place to get loans for this stuff. Payments would have been $90/canadian a month for about 3 years. They said no. Two people with an established credit history and a high income asking for a measly $3k denied! Add to this the fact that their customer service rep was exceptionally rude and TD left a sour taste in my mouth. We ended up putting it on credit cards instead and it was paid off less than two months later, so go to hell TD Bank you suck!!!!!!!

A local credit union, and Bank of America. My gf and I got a joint B of A account when we moved from OR to VA because they have so many locations nationwide. The only problem is if you don't want fees on your checking account, you have to keep a minimum balance in there.

Not that big of a deal, really, but when we move back to Oregon we might just close out our B of A account. The credit union has better rates and almost no fees.

Hehe this thread should be renamed, American vs Canadian banks - which is better and why?.

I hold accounts with several different banks but I prefer local credit unions because they actually give a ^%$!

Their savings account and CD rates cannot be beat, just got 4% on a $1,000 CD with 6 month term and their new car loans are decent also.

Yo RossMAN, not to mention that local CU's have insanely low interest rates on consumer and auto loans, as well as having incredibly low minimum balance requirements.

They also typically have the most courteous loan advisors and will frequently look at a loan on a per-applicant basis and will work with you on your approval instead of just denying you on the spot based on a credit report.

WaMu! :)

Have a mortgage, and huge (that very recently got "huge") savings account with'em. Actually I should move it all out to something secure as it wouldn't all be covered by that "Federal Insurance" policy, to give an indication of the account's size :Q , and I will be investing a good portion in a more "growth-oriented" sort of account. I want to get a "modern computer" someday, after all. :)

Previous to this, my parent's were very long-time Home Savings customers, which merged a few years back with Washington Mutual.

Royal Bank.

I had one at Canada Trust too, but i don't think they know what they're doing. I think they hooked up with Bank of Montreal or something, and they ditched mastercard and now went to Visa. Pain in the ass now because when i pay my mastercard, i need to bring the balance sheet with me. So i ditched them.
