What audio effect is Tool using in the song Lateralus?

If you know the song it's towards the end. Everything has a very "thick" sound to it. It sound like a flanger, but it's much more than that. Youtube doesn't give it justice but I've always wondered what that is to give that affect.

I'm not sure what type of pedal that is but it's coming from JC's bass (well, at least that's how it's done live...)

ns1, yeah that's where it starts and seems to get progressively stronger. There are three verses and instruments are added in each verse as well as the effect I'm talking about. Also agree on your guess on the effect.

Just going from memory there are all kinds of harmonics going on. It's so freaking thick on the 3rd/last verse you couldn't cut it with a samurai sword.
