Something along those lines.

Mostly asking from a physiological point of view, the effects on the body (liver, intestines, heart), since the stuff has got lots of cholesterol and fat.

I cannot get enough calories from foods alone since I don't eat often enough.

Body type - ecto, 5'8" 145 lbs. (been stuck at 145 for 3 months now)
Goal - 155 lbs.

I would make an effort to eat more before I'd try weight gainers. You shouldn't use supplements to work around your bad habits.

Make your own. It will be much healthier, and more effective.

Banana + 1.5 cup milk + 1/3 cup protein + 1/3 cup whole bran + 2tbs peanut butter + 2tbs honey + 1tbs olive oil

-> ~1000 calories, 50g protein, shitload of GOOD carbs, lots of fiber...

Most weight gainers are just a ton of bad carbs (sugar) and some protein.

Why do you need to gain weight? You're heavier than I am and I'm 4 inches taller than you. :\

I was drinking weight gainers and eating my normally large meals in high school when I was trying to gain weight for football. My metabolism was at such a high level from working out at the time that I still didn't gain much if any weight. Most I ever weighed was maybe 185. It wasn't until my late 20s that my metabolism came down from overdrive.

Point being, it really depends on your body and what you are trying to do.

Weight gainers are incompetent self conscious grave diggers who by my suggestion should find a fullfilling hobby.

That's a lot of prep and clean up work.
4 scoops + milk is a lot easier :p

Stuff worked a little bit (drank a lot of it regularly). Then it got expensive so I stopped. IMO, I wouldn't do it again. Just eat bigger meals (healthy ones) and you should be fine. Drinking that crap was like drinking a tub of syrup. I gagged every time I downed one. But I think my metabolism is slowing down so I can just eat decently sized meals and gain weight still.

Not really... if you do it every day, and keep the ingrediants handy, its pretty easy. Takes me less than 5 minutes to make, drink, and cleanup. Once you do it a few times, you can just eyeball the ingredients. Cleanup is easy.. all you have to do is rinse out the blender...

Don't use weight gainers. Just use protein and eat a little more if you can. The problem with weight gainers is that you get a HUGE overload of calories all at once as oppose to being spread out.

Take 3 protein shakes a day + eat your regular meals, and you WILL gain weight, and it will be more of the better kind than the bad kind.

Commerical weight gainers are crap. They are basically a little bit of protein with tons of sugar and fat. OP, how many calories do you consume in a day? If you don't know, figure it out here:

Fitday

Also as bignateyk said, if you cannot eat enough whole food to gain weight, you would be far better off making your own shakes. They are not as filling as whole food, yet you can pack a ton of healthy calories into them. Mine usually consist of the following:

skim milk
whey protein
bananas
oats
natural peanut butter
olive oil

Combine those ingrediants into whatever ratio you preter. It is very easy to make a 1000+ calorie shake, and it takes all of 5 seconds to drink.

Technically it is better just to eat more food...but many of us do not have time (or money) for that. I used the N-Large and believe me, it does work....or it did for me. Granted I didn't use it to make 1000 calorie meals or anything. Typically I just used it with 1.5 cups of milk to get around 600 calories for a "snack". However as with anything when you are trying to gain weight, you will gain a little fat with it (at least I did). Then I cut back to protein shakes with milk at around 250 calories to lose the extra fat I had gained.

Long story short....that stuff works for added weight though.

I already take minimum 2 protein shakes a day, 3 on days I lift, which is about 3-4 days a week.
Plan to also take creatine so I'll basically be on 2-3 protein shakes a day, 1 weight gainer + creatine.
I think I'm going to kill myself on that regimen :(

drink lots of water and you'll be fine. it is my understanding that too much protein can be hard on the body but if you have enough water intake (especially with the creatine) you should be fine. Someone your size lifting and eating like you should be at least 100oz a day minimum. Shoot for a gallon I always say (but I'm 185 so adjust for you)

Do you do any cardio at all?

Also what are your sleeping patterns and what are your lifting schedules like.

Back in college I was 5'11 and about 155lbs but was ripped as hell. I was tiny but ripped and I could never gain muscle or size.

Now I'm 5'11 and about 190lbs and pretty damn lean but not as ripped as when in college. I used to overtrain when I was in college and did too much cardio at the same time while trying to gain weight. I then learned how to do stuff properly and now see the gains.

I drink lots of water, not sure how much, but probably a cup an hour at work.

I don't do much cardio at all. Maybe some intense bball games once in awhile.
I was under the impression that I should limit cardio during bulking.
