What are your thoughts on this 43" Sony projection TV

Hi

I'm looking at used TVs on Craigslist. I'm probably going to move to another state in about a year so I don't want to spend a lot of money on a TV and have trouble moving it. I want to buy something and sell it a year later on craigslist.

I found a deal for a Sony projection TV. The owner sent me some pics. He's selling it for $100. I'm going to post the pics here. I can't find a lot of info on the TV. The owner says that he has it connected to his TV box without any converter or anything (I don't want to spend another $40 on a converter). I'm not sure if I trust him though. I find info posted about this TV from 2003 and I'm not sure if a TV that old would be digital or not. I've never really been up to date with what is going on with TVs so I could use some help here. Also I've heard the picture will start to fade on projection TVs after 5-6 years. Is that true?

Would you think this is a good deal?

Also this TV seems to be around 140 pounds and I'm not sure if it will fit in my car. I have to drive 15-20 miles to get it.

Would you buy a 36" toshiba flat screen TV over this? (Also have to drive 15-20 miles).

Thanks for your input 🙂

It's not a terrible deal but I would bet money it doesn't have an ATSC tuner. Perhaps he meant he had it directly hooked up to cable. That would make sense.

RPTVs definitely lose brightness over time. At 10 years it'll be noticeably dimmer....but honestly for $100 you're not going to find a better set of similar size.

OK, I have no idea what an ATSC tuner is.
Basically I want to connect it directly to a TV box I got from Comcast without having to purchase any converter or anything.

EDIT: I just noticed the manual was copyrighted in 2000. Would that mean the TV is from that year too?

An ATSC tuner is used to tune into digital broadcasts that are sent over the air. If you're hooking it up to a cable box though you will not need one. Keep in mind that this Sony TV is NOT a HDTV. You'll get a nice standard def picture from it but at best the most it can display is 480p. I'm guessing that the Toshiba flatscreen probably is a HDTV so unless it's a lot more cash and it's not in good condition I'd go with the Toshiba.
