What are your thoughts on taking photos in a cemetery?

Once in a while while travelling, I come across a cemetery or two that is just beautiful (location, landscaping, etc). I usually never seek them out, but some of them just catch your eye.

For example, a Celtic Cross in a cemetery in Wicklow, Ireland

Just curious what everyone here thinks about photography in cemeteries. Pretty much all of the ones i've taken pictures within were used long long ago, but there just seems something odd about taking photos in such a sacred place.

I used to spend time in cemeteries, walking around and looking at all the stuff there. I was never disrespectful, I minded my step, and I had no ill intent. I see it the same way for photography. If someone in life would have minded you there after there death, I don't think they would have been placed in such a public place--so I don't think they mind. My reasoning anyway.

i've been planning for a while to make a trip to a couple cemeteries in the houston to photograph some monuments. as long as you're respectful i don't see any harm. much better than the cemetery hide and seek we used to play after getting liquored up in college

Cemeteries, particularly the really old ones, have some of the most beautiful and interesting stonework available outside of a European cathedral and are ideal subjects for artistic photos. If names (on gravestones) appear in a picture and you intend to sell the picture or otherwise use it for profit, it might be a good idea to get permission first. Also, a few cemeteries don't let people wander around (for various reasons), but if they are open to public visitors, I don't see any other reason why you shouldn't be able to take pictures. If you aren't sure, you can always ask the caretaker for permission.

my photography class actually had a "field trip" to a local cemetery. it was one of our first and it featured some amazing landscapes and marble-work.
be on your best behavior and you should be fine.

I love cemeteries as well. Very peaceful and pretty. I once ate a Chipotle Burrito in one of them. Don't remember the name of the (dead) guy I sat next (on top?) of.

Have done it many times - especially when doing genealogical research. Tombstones provide a wealth of usefull data. I never thought a thing about it - no one ever paid any attention me. The residents couldn't care less.

its fun. night time is fun too, 2 flashlights with different color temps or different gels can make some really neat photos
