What are your thoughts on fur coats/jackets/clothing?

I recently received a gift from a girlfriend who is quite well-off. She gave me a 100% rabbit fur coat by Sherri Bodell, which is lovely and soft but... made from the fur/skin of dead animals. 🙁

I have never purchased or owned a piece of fur clothing in my life, and my husband is also vehemently against the fur business/fur trade. He has asked me to either give the coat back to her or to give it away to someone else, as it is completely against what he believes in.

I'm having mixed feelings about it. One one hand, it is a very nice, warm, lovely coat, plus it was received as a gift. On the other hand, if I ever wear it I may feel like a huge hypocrite (and also upset my husband) since I am completely against everything that it stands for (the senseless killing animals for their fur).

What are your thoughts on the usage of animal fur in clothing?

Poll included on what I should do about the coat.

I don't really like it, but then I guess I can't complain since I know some cows and kangaroos died to make my motorcycle suit, boots, gloves, jacket.

Kangaroos? :Q

That's a good point, I have a pair of leather gloves and my husband has several pairs of leather shoes that he doesn't seem to mind wearing around. I guess the plight of soft, furry animals receives more pity and concern.

Thinner, lighter, more abrasion resistant. 😀

First, there are enough rabbits on earth to make everyone a damn rabbit fur jacket.
Somehow, someway, something you do each day or something you use involved the death of an animal in some way or other.
We're animals, just a highly evolved form. It's natural to use resources within your ability to acquire, as long as it is done in a manner that does not harm the earth or endanger a species so future generations may enjoy.

edit: Besides, those rabbits were probably made into food for either humans or other animals one way or another. It would be stupid to waste all that good meat just to get their fur.

Eh just enjoy it. Sure the furcoat is more conspicuous than other articles, but you will be surprised at how much leather/animals are used for our clothing/shoes.

Agree to get rid of it, but only if your husband becomes a vegan. If you have to suffer for the poor animals, so should he.

Fur is great but it does have that "bad side" doesn't it?

And those radical tosser peta folk throw blood on those wearing fur - brilliant solution. :disgust:

They should tar and feather those peta folk and make them walk on chicken wire hooked to the parking lot 277V system so they dance like chickens!

I don't wear fur or leather........ but that's because I don't like that kind of stuff.

If people want to wear it......... more power to them.

Cheers,
Aquaman

Not in to fur. I do have leather shoes but most people just 'accept' leather shoes, belts etc.

If you were in a cold country ala Alaska and had a seal fur coat or whatever, it would be 'fine' if your a native as it is f0cking cold and you can't pop down to your local shop.

Does your husband own leather shoes, belt, or wallet?

Since cows are not cute furry friendly creatures we are happy to slaughter them and use their hide, but oh noes, not the wabbit!

I think hippies pick on rich women because its a hell of a lot safer to throw paint and spit on an old lady then it is to do the same to a mean biker who wears leather.

Wearing fur means that you enjoy soft furry objects. It says nothing about your stance on animal treatment. Some may like to pretend that it means you are anti-animal but they are wrong. Enjoy.

What is the problem?

We use animals for our needs. Keep it, wear it and love it. Oh, and dump the controlling husband. bad mojo.

I don't care for them myself, but I see no reason for you to give the coat away if you like it.

I really don't see the point of fur when cashmere/wool is so nice.

I  my cashmere top coat which I got for coupons on top of sale on top of sale at a department store for ~$190. MSRP is around $450.

However, you are a chick (which I didn't realize until reading the OP), so I don't really know what to say. Fur isn't for me.
