What are your plans now that we all know America is on a steep and inevitable decline?

One of my big passions is politics, and I really did have hope, even through these last four years, but let's face it, now we all know the writing is on the wall. America is finished. The election was not a repudiation of Trump as it should have been. The basic machinations of democracy are questioned now by almost an entire party - who if they are not questioning it directly, are staying silent as their leader does. What are you going to focus on next since it's pretty evident this whole system is utterly fucked beyond repair?

You need some sun, maybe a little time out with real people living their lives.

This is you.

I definitely can't wait until it's warmer again to go on more long bike rides in the burning dystopian hellscape that is NYC, as I've posted here before. But I'd rather get advice from folks that don't say 'well it looks reasonable enough that the election could have been rigged'

In the meantime, it's tough to be someone that actually gives a shit about the progress of humankind in how it organizes itself politically, socially and culturally.

My plan is the same it was before, try to retire in 10 years when I hit 50, then move somewhere warm and relatively cheap.

I do agree that the most likely future for America is decline and increasing political instability. I also see no plausible way to fix this as the problem is the Republican Party and they have constructed an alternate reality for themselves.

Work on getting the non-fascists elected so they can pull this failing country back from the brink of collapse/civil war. Keep yourself and your family/community healthy as you do so.

Also, the second amendment protection of personal firearm ownership is no longer just a right, it's a responsibility.

Travel outside the US and be a digital nomad. I am still driving an old vehicle, did not purchase anything expensive such as a big house or expensive vehicle or jewelry. I can just sell or give away all of my possessions and be free as a bird. Seriously considering it soon. Five years or less.

Someone I knew said the US is like Roman Empire. Spending too much resources (manpower, money, etc.) to take care things externally and not enough internally.

The planet got by without you in the past, it will manage in the future.

That's a good plan, one I already have in place. There are quite a few pleasant and inexpensive places to live, it's all about picking the one you're most comfortable with.

I wish I could retire at 50. I still have at least 22 years to grind. Hopefully it won't totally go to shit in that time.

I mean seriously, look in the mirror. Here we are all inconsequential, no matter how much we care or do not care about the state of things. What is your point? Oh wait, you thought you had one. That just makes you particularly more delusional than the average inconsequential internet moron.

Yes, I’m looking at Central America most likely, you can live incredibly cheaply there. Plans have a way of going awry or whatever, but hopefully it all works out.

You need to stop fiddling while Rome burns. Given your long history of being ignorant of just about everything going on in this country I put it to you that you are incapable of rendering any kind of judgement on the validity of anyone's opinions concerning the state of the country.

I wish you luck.
My original plan (back in my late 20's) had me retired and wealthy at 45. Then I was introduced to this thing called "recession". That was a bite on the ass I never saw coming. Ever since then, every time I see light at the end of the tunnel we have another one. I wish they weren't so popular.

All of humanity is probably fukd. I'm not sure we can survive our own creations. Nuclear weapons, machines which burn fossil fuels, even something so seemingly innocuous and helpful as the internet. If these technologies were introduced 1000 years ago, humanity would have rapidly destroyed itself then. Only modern civilization with its emphasis on democracy and secular humanism has kept a lid on it today. But we're still too tribalistic and hence cannot be trusted with the power of our own creations.

Whatever America's immediate future, I think this century is the last of humanity thriving on this planet before we go into major decline. We may re-emerge a long time later to thrive again, but that's well past the lifetimes of any of us.

Just hope it doesn't all go to shit before we pass.

It is ironic that Americans want to move and live in Central America while folks over there want to move and live here. Just like Americans (old and young) move to developing countries in Asia to live and retire while folks in those same developing countries in Asia would love to move and live in America. The other side looks greener I reckon.

So let say the US will be in decline, who will rise up and take over? Or we will have many regional mini powers and not just one single fully super duper power?

That's the whole schtick. We are all millionaires that can retire at 45 so keep everyone else down cause we are just one little tiny step away from being that guy, and fuck the rest.

I like the US just fine, it’s more of the fact that I need a lot less money in my retirement account if I’m living there and if I’m retiring at 50 it’s going to be a lot smaller than if I waited another 10-15 years.

I'm always amazed at the all the chicken littles running around screaming doom and gloom for the US. Seriously, step outside and get some fresh air. Travel and see the vast and great land of ours and refocus and get help on your mental state. I question your mental state if you think this country is falling apart and on steep and drop off the cliff decline.

US is fine. Are we going to be the number #1 economic power in the world in the future? No. China will be. But that's ok. Nothing can stop China from becoming #1 economic power in the future. It's just simple math. But is it bad being number #2 economic power? No. US will still be #1 in political power. US is still and will be the land of opportunity and the envy of the world.

I don't know if it's hate or rage that prevents people from being able to look at the big picture but so many people have trouble seeing. I just find it remarkable they're so obsessed with looking for all the small things that are wrong that they miss all the big things that are great. Focus on the big picture. Don't let your obsession with politics close your eyes and mind. That will lead you nowhere and will severely hurt you in all aspects of your life.

Plans? We don't need no stinking plans. But an escape route wouldn't hurt though. As far as retirement goes, not as good as it might sound. You forget the days of the week, WHERE DID TUESDAY GO? If you have money to travel, you're too tired to go anywhere. Mowing the lawn and taking out the trash is the high point of the week. You can't go anywhere anyway because you keep forgetting where you last left your keys. And most people think that your some idiot and losing your mind, which you probably are. You fart a lot i.e. the expression OLD FART. You COULD run for president since old presidents are the in-thing now-a-day but that would mean leaving the house and you don't want to leave the the house, not at your age. One slip, one missed stair can land you with a broken hip or broken arm or broken leg. Even playing around with the dog can mess up your ankle and then you have to walk around wearing a special Herman-Monster boot for six weeks. Sure, retirement sounds nice but only if you can retire in your 30's.

That's all fine and dandy until the clashing groups around you start the war they desire.

Ironically, Joe fractured his ankle playing with his dog.
