It's a CMS.

Tried it myself and wasn't so keen on it. But the target audience for Joomla doesn't exactly fit my profile.

I rather work in a framework then in a CMS.

If Joomla doesn't work for you, try Drupal.

If that doesn't work for you, best of luck finding something

It depends on your needs.

Joomla is generally easier to pick up (as in learn how it works and how to develop within it).

Drupal has a higher learning curve but is more "powerful" (especially in terms of use contributed plugins/modules/whatever you want to call them). Many drupal sites can get 99% of required functionality (meaning, 99% of what you specifically may need) out of them by using views/cck (those are two modules) and various other community plugins.

That being said, they are both older (as in, not OOP). This means they are well established with large communities. However, I've come to be a "code snob" like Hyperblaze in that I prefer more "structured" OOP frameworks / systems. It's too easy to write sloppy code within Joomla (which correlates to how easy it is to develop for it). The Drupal learning curve may be a bit steep (Apress' Pro Drupal Development is a great book on Drupal development) but I think it's a better CMS (ESPECIALLY due to the Drupal community. Check out www.learnbythedrop.com to get some good tutorials on it).

If you have basic needs, I'd go Joomla. (Hardest part about Joomla when coming into it without prior knowledge is figuring out how the template, positions, modules, articles and the menus fit in together).

Hope this is halfway coherent....

That was what i was looking for. What i have planned for this site, is a blog style main page, related to the main focus of the site. There will obviously be commenting system, etc... I also was looking to be able to have an attached forum which i could post the most recent topics into a small form on the side. I am looking to put the about/etc links on the left. tabbed browsing above and then the right side will be the most recent posts, and some other things... The middle part, i would like to show the most recent news article about said focus of site, with a 3 image horizontal posting, and then scroll bars for more info (similar to this sites main page but with scroll bars for up to 6 different articles. however the 3 "hidden" articles i would also like to have repeated below just in case. There will be some ads across the page.

I have used wordpress, i dont know if joomla is less or more powerful, i know they are completely different however too, as joomla seems more equipped for more varied content. I am going to look at Drupal as well

I'd stick with wordpress for those needs actually.

Use this plugin.

For displaying the most recent posts in wordpress :)

As far as I'm aware, that's not being called a "code snob", it's called being a developer!

CMS are more for those who don't want to really code, they just want to get a site up and running with minimal effort. However, that being said they have much less control over the end result.

A framework is where YOU have control since you are the one coding in it.

I love frameworks, especially OO ones!

+1 vote for wordpress and phpbb plugin.

You can get so many of your needs done with open source projects out of the box (minus templating...) and just tweak the hell out of it for the remaining stuff.

Eh, i have some more ideas that i hope to put into drupal now that i have researched it... I hope to have a community as well, in which you can have photos, and a facebook style feed in which you can say what you are doing. This site is going to cater towards an enthusiast base, and not an inexpensive product either

We can only give you feedback based on the information you give to us.

At this point, I have no idea what you are aiming for.

drupal works allright...I would pass on Joomla personally..I also do not like how the back end works.

If you are making a blog, why not just use wordpress?

Because the features i want to implement, i dont know if they are completely possible with WP... i have WP running on detroitbailout.com

but my next site, is going to hopefully include user galleries, forums, user blogs, a facebook style status/wall ability, and more... but I would really like it if someone was able to contact me so I can discuss all the different options. I have run across more, such as Django, but having no idea exactly which one will be best, is a problem.

I much prefer CMS Made Simple. The communities around Drupal and Joomla are much larger but for simplicity and ease of workflow I think CMSMS is the best.

everyone has different needs.

There is no one solution that is perfect for everything

In my opinion, simplicity is so overrated. I'd take functional over simplicity any day!

But that's just me!
